A bench grinder can be used to grind. The machine can grind down sharp edges or smooth burrs.A bench grinder can be used to sharpen metal.
Step 1: Before turning the grinder on, perform a safety check.
The grinder needs to be secured to the bench. There is a tool rest on the grinder. The metal item will rest at the tool rest. There is space between it and the grinding wheel if the rest is secured in place. There are objects and debris around the grinder. You should have enough space to push the piece of metal you are working with on the grinder. If you want to cool off metal that gets too hot while it's being grinded, fill a pot or bucket with water and place it near a metal grinder.
Step 2: It's a good idea to protect yourself from flying metal sparks.
Wear safety glasses, steeled toed shoes, ear plugs, and a face mask to protect you from grinding dust.
Step 3: The bench grinder needs to be turned on.
Stand to the side.
Step 4: The piece of metal needs to be worked on.
You should be in front of the grinder.Holding the metal tightly in both hands, place it on the tool rest and push it towards the grinder.Don't allow metal to touch the sides of the grinder.
Step 5: To cool the metal, dip the piece in the water pot.
If you want to cool the metal off, dip it in a bucket or pot of water. The steam created by the hot metal hitting the cooler water should be avoided by keeping your face away from the pot.
Step 6: Remove a piece of metal.
The piece of metal should be moved across the grinder until it is gone.If you hold the metal against the grinder for too long, it will warm it up and cause damage.
Step 7: Cut a piece of metal.
Hold the metal on the tool rest and turn it until the grinder comes in contact with the spot you want to cut.The piece will break in half if you keep turning it.You have to hold each end. When you're done, dip the ends in water.
Step 8: Take a piece of metal and shape it.
You can bend a piece of metal by touching it to the grinder. You would grind a part off with a back and forth motion. The metal is warm enough to be pulled away from the grinder. To bend the metal, use both hands. It must be the right shape to dip it in water.
Step 9: There is a metal blade.
Hold the piece on the rest with both hands.Slowly push the blade into the grinder, angling it slightly up or down to create a sharp edge.Rub the blade across the bench grinder to prevent cutting into it or warming it up too much.
