How to use the Pro Tools first pre roll feature is a free lesson.
I believe that it is one of the most useful tools for self recording artists. There is a feature called the Pro Tools First Pre Roll.
If you are an artist who records your own music, you will understand how difficult it is to hit record in your DAW, then switch over to your instrument in time to come in on the recording.
Self recording artists have to start their recordings early to give themselves time to switch over. This isn't a problem if you're recording from the beginning. It can be hard to hit record if you want to re-record a few bars of an existing take, then switch over to your instrument in time to start your take.
In normal recording mode, you won't be able to hear your original takes on your tracks. The original takes will be silenced as soon as you start recording.
This wouldn't be a problem if you were working with a producer. The producer can use the quick punch feature to let you listen to the take right up to where you want to start recording, and then punch you in.The quick punch feature isn't much use if you're recording your self, because it gives you no time to switch from hitting record to performing your take.
This problem is solved by the Pro Tools First Pre Roll feature. Before recording begins, the pre roll feature can be set up to play any number of bars. You tell Pro Tools where you want the recording to take place. You can tell it how many bars you want to hear by specifying the number of bars that the pre roll should last.In play back mode, you can specify the number of pre roll bars that Pro Tools will play.Once the pre roll is complete, it will switch to record mode.
You can begin the recording by clicking on the time base ruler in the edit window.
The Pro Tools First pre roll feature can be enabled by clicking on the icon in the extended transport window.
The pre roll will play if it is highlighted in light green. No pre roll will be played if it is not.
You can specify how many bars of pre roll you want in the numbers next to the icon. There are 8 bars here. The start of the pre roll is marked by a yellow flag.
Pro Tools will play the session from the location of the yellow flag when we begin the recording process. As soon as the blue marker is reached, it will enter record mode. All record enabled tracks will record signals at that point. While the pre roll plays out, the record button will flash. When record mode is entered, it will be lit in red.
If you want to specify a time value for the pre roll instead of a number of bars, you can switch the time base from beats and bars to mins and secs.
It's like having a producer punch you in.The Pro Tools First pre roll feature gives you time to move over to your instrument. To get a feel for the existing takes, you can listen to a few bars.
It is pretty useful, don't you think?Do you think you could use this feature?Do you record your own music but can't switch to your instrument quickly enough? How will the Pro Tools First pre roll feature help you in your recordings?Let me know in the comments section.
