How To Write a Canadian Date

Canadian dates can be hard to write because of several accepted formats. When filling out forms or writing a document, numerical dates are usually used. The Government of Canada only uses the YYYY-MM-DD format to write the date.Since they are easily confused, it's best to avoid the MM/DD/YYYY formats. You can combine words and numbers to write the date. The day and year are written using numbers while the month is written as a word.

Step 1: The date can be written in the international standard format.

In Canada, this is the most common way to write a numerical date.If you see a form indicating that the date must be written in this format, this means that you write the year first, the month second, and the day last.To separate each field, use a hyphen or slash. For example, the date is 15 February 2019.The international standard for writing dates is YYYY/MM/DD.Most countries accept this format. The date must be written in this format on most Canadian government forms.

Step 2: Since they are easy to misunderstand, avoid MM/DD/YYYY.

The day, MM to the month, and YYYY are referred to in both formats. In MM/DD/YYYY format, the date is 1 April, but inDD format it is 4 January. It is easy to misinterpret the date if you do not know whether the MM/DD/YYYY format is used.If you just read the date numerically, you don't know which number indicates the day and which is the month.

Step 3: Use a capital letter to write the first letter.

It is important to write the title of the month in capital letters to make it look professional. For example, always write "July" instead of "September"The names of the months are proper nouns. The first letter of the month name doesn't need to be capitalized. If you have limited space, you can shorten the name of the month.January would be an appropriate substitute for Jan.

Step 4: Numbers can be used to write the day and year.

The day and year should be written using numbers rather than letters on documents such as reports, letters, or assignments.Don't write "the twentieth of May, two thousand and nineteen", but instead use "May 20, 2019" or "20 May 2019."

Step 5: Don't use ordinal indicators such as th, st, rd, or nd.

When writing Canadian dates, you don't need an ordinal indicator to keep the date concise. You don't need to write "August 26th, 2019" in order to keep it as " August 26, 2019."The date is more streamlined with this.

Step 6: Unless a different format is specified, write out the date in words.

The month-day-year or day-month- year sequence can be used. The format to write the date for letters, reports, and assignments would be June 11, 2019.The day-month-year sequence is best for documents with a lot of dates. If the month comes first, you should leave out the commas after the day.The year that the date is written as part of a sentence is always followed by a comma.

Step 7: When writing a date range, write "to"

The word "to" should be used in between the dates if you need to write down a range.13 November to 7 January 2020 is an example of using this format. It is recommended to use the word to instead of the dash symbol in prose. If you use a dash, use an en dash instead of a hyphen.
