If a 100 dollar bill is real, you should check it.

Many security features are used by the U.S. treasury. There are almost nine million counterfeit dollars in the U.S., which is why they have to.There are more security features to check on the series 2009 bills. There is a portrait of Benjamin Franklin on the front of the US$100 bill.

Step 1: There are serial numbers.

The series should correspond to the serial number. There is a serial number in the upper left and lower right corners. You are dealing with a counterfeit if the serial number doesn't correspond to the series. The serial number should begin with J if the bill is series 2009.The serial number should begin with L if the bill is series 2009A.

Step 2: Franklin has a shoulder.

The new $100 uses raised printing.Pick up the spot with your fingers. You should be able to feel it.

Step 3: Check for color-changing ink.

There is an inkwell to the left of the bill's serial number. As you look at the bill from different angles, the bell inside the inkwell should change color from copper to green. The numeral 100 next to the inkwell should change color as well.

Step 4: The bill should be held up to the light.

The left side of Franklin's portrait has an embedded thread. The number 100 and the letters USA are visible from both sides of the note. The strip should glow pink if you hold the bill up to the light. If your business handles a lot of bills, you can purchase a counterfeit detector which shines UV light. The AccuBanker D63 Compact is a popular option. It costs $50.

Step 5: Look for the blue security ribbon.

There is a blue security ribbon just to the right of Franklin's portrait. If you move the bill back and forth, you will see the number 100 and tiny bells move from side to side. The ribbon is woven into the paper. You have a fake if the blue ribbon is peeling off the bill.

Step 6: There is a portrait of the watermark.

There is a faint image of Benjamin Franklin on the right-hand side of the bill. There is a portrait on the side of the bill.

Microprinting was a security feature on older bills.Microprinting can be seen in different spots depending on the year the bill was issued. The outer edge of the portrait oval should have the words "The United States of America" written on it.The number 100 should be on the lower left-hand corner of the bill. You should see the words "The United States of America" in Franklin's coat.
