Anaconda attributed the closing to plummeting copper prices. Governor Schwinden said the company told him it could not continue to produce copper at a cost of $1.30 a pound in a market that pays only 70 cents a pound. In addition, the rich copper deposits that once characterized ''the richest hill on earth'' are gone.
