Primitive camping is allowed on many DEC lands, including Forest Preserve lands in the Catskills and Adirondacks, as well as on State Forest lands outside the Preserve. Primitive camping is prohibited on Unique Areas, Wildlife Management Areas, and a few other categories of state land.
Is backcountry camping allowed in White Mountains?
Backcountry tent camping is free throughout the White Mountains, and no permit is needed. (You will need to purchase a parking permit to leave your car at the trail head.) Check with a ranger station for current restrictions on camping in the backcountry.
Can you backcountry camp in national parks?
Yes and No. Most national parks allow for “backcountry camping”, which is the same as “dispersed camping” or “boondocking“, but they allow it only in specific areas. If you plan to camp in such an area, the National Park will let you camp wherever you want.
Can you camp on state land in the Adirondacks?
