Is it a good idea to take Miralax every day for a long time?

Miralax is used to treat occasional constipation or irregular bowel movements. It should only be used for a short period of time. It's a good idea to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about a safer long term laxative.

I've tried to know my doctor. There is a doc.I have to disagree with you because you wanted me to take it 2 times a day, but it wasn't working.I cheated death my whole life and I need that to make me feel better.

I think you are fine.Miralax saved my 8 year old. When he was 3 years old, I took him to a children's hospital because he cried and screamed when he had to go.I was worried about celiac disease. He is negative after being tested. He was put on Miralax daily since he was diagnosed with chronic constipation. We know if he misses a dose.I have cried with him because it's still so painful. As long as the doctors agree and my boy can have a happy healthy day, I'm trusting they know what they're doing.Miralax can be given to babies as young as 3 months and you can take it the rest of your life.

My son is the best eater in the house.I have to fix veggies because he loves them so it's not his diet.He got the chronic constipation card dealt to him.

After my colonoscopy, my GI doctor told me to take 1 dose of Myralax every day for the rest of my life.It worked so well that I did it for months.I stopped using it.I told the new doc about the previous doc's recommendation after he treated me for similar issues. My new doctor told me to get on with it.I forgot how easy life is because of this prescription. At the end of the day, if your doctor recommends it, you should believe him or her.Just do it.

At 3 months of age, my youngest didn't like going to the bathroom. It didn't matter that he was only breastfed.I ate fiber rich foods. We tried high fiber foods again once he was old enough. We started on the drug at 3 months old. He's three years old and we still give him 1.5 cups of tea a day. There are two options from a person who has been there.1.A screaming, hurting child who cannot produce a bowl movement can't be dealt with with a high fiber diet.2.Provide a daily dose of miralax and have a happy child.I will take the latter.Best of luck to you all!!

Miralax is safe.I give it to my cat.It was the only thing that worked for her.

My daughter was 4 months old at the time.We were told to use miralax at a very small dose.We stopped after she potty trained. She ate it once she was old enough, but it was dairy that caused it, so try no dairy for a month before ruling it out.I'm pretty sure it's due to the long term use of miralax, she has chronically loose stools now.I wish someone would have told me about the benefits of Vitamin C.Enough to loosen the stool.VITAMIN C people. If you do not have to use miralax, don't.No dairy, too.

Miralax is safe to use on a daily basis according to any and all of the gastroenterolgists I have seen in the past. The daily use is much safer than using every day.

I've taken it for a long time and my husband wonders if it's causing small tears, skin redness and puffy skin between my anus and vaginia.I take a capful every day. It's the only thing that works. All my other doctors know about the GI doctors. It's the best product for me.I used to take a lot of stool softeners daily to keep going. Is going daily at least once a day better than getting backed up?

I use it on a daily basis. It saved my life.I have been sick for 10 years.I would go for 1-2 months. When I went to the ER, I was on Miralax for a few days, until regular and then once a day.I have to move to other days.I think it's safer than the alternative.

My son is going to be 4 in September and he has been taking adult doses of MiraLax for the past year and a half.It is safe to say that it is okay to take MiraLax for a long period of time because the doctors don't seem to think there is a problem.Check with your doctor before taking any medication for a long period of time on your own.

I'm sorry, but your son is 4 and taking adult doses of Miralax? Why?Is he resting?I can't help but wonder why a doctor would do this.Pears and other fiber rich foods would be better for your son.If this is correct, please check with your local pharmacy.Take care.

Your comment was appreciated. We tried fiber rich foods, but they didn't help. Two years ago, the doctor put my son on Milk of Mag because he was completely impacted. This didn't help either. He was put on the Miralax by another pedi gastroenterologist. It took a long time for that to start working. My son is doing better now.To keep him going, his dosage is down to 1 cap every other day.Miralax is one of the safest drugs to take for a long period of time, and I was told by the doctor that I inquired about.I didn't like the amount. My son gets constipated if we go too long without the medicine. It doesn't keep him regular if he eats the proper amount of fiber.Prunes do not help.

At one point I was told to take two per day, but as I have had this for two years, I think there has to be a better way.

I just finished treatment for hep c and I was so sick, this drink saved my life, it also got me up and moving, I make it for my whole family.

Thanks for the advice. We tried smoothie for my son, but he wouldn't drink them.He doesn't like ice cream.I think it's the texture.I am always willing to try again.

My 12 year old son was having problems with his bowels and he was put on miralax daily by his doctor. She did a check up with him every 2 months and she recently told me to give it to him.It works for him and has been over a year now.

My husband is being treated in Chemo. He has been hospitalized several times.Miralax was put on him by his Oncologist after he was hit.Miralax can be used in hot liquid, such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate, soup.No more bitter taste. He has not had any more Pooh problems.I hope this helps someone.

My daughter is on the drug twice a day.She stops up if I take her off the Miralax. She has been in the hospital. We worry about her taking the Miralax so often, but her GI doctor thinks it's safe.

I was a nurse and wanted to share this information. The longer you take them, the more you need them. When you depend on medicines, your body forgets how to do things on its own.If your son has only gone for a year and a half because of Miralax, you need to find a way to let his body learn how to do it on its own. What is normal for a person? His normal may be less often. It will take a few days to fill up again if you force him to clean out.

I was prescribed the same amount of medicine by the doctor and now I only take it once a day.Fiber does nothing for me.I fly for a living.I have been on miralax for a year now and it has made a huge difference in my life.

My 4 year old has had issues with his bowels since he started eating slid foods. He's been on Miralax for a long time and it scares me as to if it can cause his body to become dependent on it or if he can grow larger without it.He was hospitalized for impacted poops and needed a barium enema, but he doesn't want it to get to that point again because it must be harsh on his little body. We've tried a lot of things, such as prunes, fiber rich foods, and even a vegan diet, but it hasn't helped his constipation. My 4 year old boy is a vegetarian and rarely eats meat.We don't want to restrict his diet too much because he gets goat yogurt and wants to take it off.He gets a lot of vitamins and minerals.Let us know if anyone has found a similar case and a solution.

I was 37 years old when something happened in my GI system.I don't care what I eat, I've tried all the diet plans.Miralax is the only thing that allows me to leave. It has been a life saver.Every day there is a cap.I've been to several GI doctors, tested for celiac, 2 colonoscopies, and nothing found other than a healthy GI, that won't work! Please pass along any answers that you can find.I have concerns about the long-term use of drugs.

In 2012 I had a bad fall.I was put on drugs for pain relief.I had to have surgery because I became so costipated.I would have liked to have been using Mira lax then.

I have been a chair bound massive stroke victim for 10 years.I have more regular bowel movements if I consume enough water and take Miralax daily.Miralax needs water to work.

Parents Against Miralax has a Facebook page. The FDA is in contact with them. Many adverse effects have been reported. Many people share health issues with their children. They send the information to the FDA.They have responded.

It is fine for daily use after spine surgery. It draws water into the colon to keep the stool soft.

When I take it, I get short of breath and light headed, but my blood pressure is good, and my doctor says it's my Irritable Bowel Syndrome, when it feels like something is pinching my heart. Is anyone else feeling the same?

I have had my heart start racing and I will get lightheaded, but after I use the restroom having a BM made it better.I'll start to feel numb on my left side. It's scary, but I've been checked by a doctor and they say everything is normal.

Miralax has saved my life because it was recommended by the doctor. It seems to work if you take it twice a day. When following that regimen, I usually have a bowel movement every day.It has improved my quality of life by one hundred percent.I have no choice but to use Miralax when things don't work out.

I have had 2 episodes of diverticulitis and my doctor told me to use a generic substitute.I explained that my stool is soft and sometimes I have to run to the bathroom.I can't imagine what it would be like to take a laxative on a daily basis.I came to this thread to find out why I might not take my doctor's advice.

About 5 years ago, I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and severe Anemia. It's a slow drawn out process and I have several bowel movements daily.I think that's close to being constipated.I felt a racing heart, light headedness, warmth and tingling all over, but not all the time, which is puzzling me.I have a question for you all, did the Miralax help the symptoms?

I was told by my doctor to take MiraLax every day for the rest of my life due to a history of diverticulitis, but I didn't.It was worse than child birth when I was admitted to the hospital after arriving home. After a few days in the hospital, it resolved itself.I prefer taking MiraLax the rest of my life because it is less dangerous than diverticulitis, bowel obstruction, pain and surgery.High fiber, large amounts of water, and all of the other things that work for other people are not for me.We are all different.

My mom was told by the doctors to take miralax for the rest of her life.It has been 10 years.I think her mind is going in a different direction. She gets easily flustered and frightened. She has never been like this before. All of a sudden, she was like this for 6 months. Some people think it is dementia. Is miralax bad for the mind?

I used to be that way before I took Miralax every day.My friend is 84 years old and she has never taken Miralax.I don't know if Miralax contributes to dementia or Alzheimers. It's a good idea to research the effects of Miralax on memory andmood change. It might be helpful to research the side effects of other prescriptions.

I was 60 years old when I had trouble with IBS.I have been to the Gastroenterologist a number of times. They gave me all of the expensive drugs and they didn't work.I drank lots of water and tried high fiber foods.I thought I was having a heart attack when I saw the pain in my stomach, but it was actually high fiber that made it worse.Laxatives?I was tricked to go to the opposite direction. My stomach would get out of whack and take a while to get back to normal.I was always having stomach pain.I would be in distress when I ate anything.I tried Miralax for the first time about 2 months ago.It has been a life saver.I have generally been pain free and have been able to have BM's.

I worry about taking it on an extended basis but after reading some of the comments, I feel better about it.I will check with my doctor soon.I only have to take it every few days. Thanks for your feedback.

There are two types of fiber and too much of one can be confusing. It is beneficial to our health to havesoluble and insoluble fiber.I would take the time to know the difference. It beats a bowel obstruction, however, you shouldn't need the miralax!!

I have been taking miralax for a long time and it only makes me gain water weight because it absorbs water into the colon.Which for easy bathroom time is worth it to me.

Taking benifiber, rubbing my stomach from right to left, and not eating as much sugar breads or milk products were some things that helped me as a kid.

I have been talking about it for a long time.I was told to drink a lot of water.I can't stop going when it starts to work. The stool is very soft.No matter how much I try to keep the runs away, nothing keeps them away.Lower doses can't seem to get a normal, solid, consistent bowel movement.I get impacted with stool if I don't take Miralax.I need to do digital removal to get things moving. The rectum and hemorrhoids are affected by having diarrhea. The severe burning irritation doesn't work with Tucks, hemorrhoid creams, etc.I was given prescription cream by the doctor.I can't seem to find a happy medium. Is anyone else having this problem?

Sorry to hear about your dilemma.I was helped from being too loose by cutting the Miralax dosage.I was told to take over the counter magnesium because of my irregular heart beats.I had to ask him how much, so I started taking two 400 capsule with food twice a day.Whoa, worked as well as Miralax.I had to back off for two days.My heart and bowels are the same.Wonder if that would help you.Milk of Magnesia is made from magnesium.

I have had similar experiences.Digital removal is embarrassing to me.I've been on Miralax for several years and have been experiencing side effects.Vomiting, stomach pain, and abdominal pains are some of the symptoms.I also take magnesium.I'm paranoid that I won't be able to go.Every now and then, I experience rectal bleeding.

I commented on magnesium taking the place of Miralax.I was taking too much magnesium and it started acting like a laxative.I stopped taking it five months ago because of the loose bowel movements.I started taking magnesium oxide because I knew it was the most likely cause of diarrhea. If the loose bowels continue, I will probably go to a doctor.I don't have to take Miralax or magnesium anymore.

My entire life, I have had chronic constipation.Miralax was recommended by my gastrin ologist a couple years ago.It has worked well for me.It gave me nausea.I was told by my doctor to take 4 fiber laxative pills a day to bulk up the stool. It is a natural action of fiber that the jar says is gentle enough for everyday use.It has worked well for me.

I'm going to make this short.Sometimes I take Miralax twice a day.It feels like I'm dehydrated when I take it twice a day, even though I drink a ton of water.I'm going to sound different but there's a reason. If a doctor prescribes this to you and says it's safe, then you should listen to your body.I wouldn't do it until you got permission from the doctor.Taking a laxative on a daily basis will stop your intestines from contracting on their own and that is a bigger problem than what you're dealing with.Unless your intestines aren't working and Contracting on it's own, then you probably need to take something.Do not listen to these people telling you that it's okay to give it to your child.

No!It's not ok, think about it.What do you think it will do to a small child? They'll have to deal with this for the rest of their lives because their parents aren't thinking about the future. You can give your child other things that are safer.Mineral oil is good for occasional use.I would be changing my diet to include more medicine.McDonald's Happy Meals and ramen noodles are bad for your kids. They need more vegetables than fruits. There are many ways to dress them up to make them more appealing to a child.I have 5 kids and my daughter went through the same.I don't care what the problem is, you can find the right food to help you go to the bathroom.I was in my phone and it got stuck on the side of the road.

I would like to help anyone read this post.I was a kid and a male adult at the same time.I tried every laxative on the market.I tried to eat healthy.Fruits and veggies have fiber. As an adult running marathons, I was very active as a teen, high-school football, basketball track, wrestling, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.I was taking Miralax with my morning shakes every day in my 30's.I'm in trouble if they ever stop selling Miralax because I would buy it by the cases.I had 2 colonoscopies in my 20's that I was worried could be signs of colon cancer, but the findings came back clear. Some people have different issues than others, that's what the doctors didn't have any answers for.

I continued to look for answers even though I wasn't happy with the answers.I thought I might be allergic to the foods I've been told are healthy.I completely cut grain and dairy products and found non-WHEY shakes that are vegetarian.I eat one simple healthy meal and take two shakes a day. This solved my problems.Miralax hasn't been used by me in a while.I feel better than ever because of my low body weight and heavy genetics.I thought to give up bread and dairy products was a bad idea. They are good for you.For me, they are not.I hope this will help someone else out there. There are blessings.

I will have to give your advice a try, I think you helped a lot.MiraLax has been prescribed to me and I have been taking it.It works when I take it, but I worry if my body will depend on it and not be able to function on its own in the long run.I am a pretty young teen so I would like a better alternative. Thanks for taking the time to help others in the same situation.

I don't care what the problem is, you can find the right food to help you go to the bathroom. What a bull.I've advanced M.S., I haven't been outside since Oct. of last year, and I have to take 16 different pills every day for pain, 2 of them are Opioid for Pain, these are known to cause CSD!I'm on a very low-fat diet.I still get up to 150 g of fiber a day from Metamucil.MiraLAX has to be taken daily.I'm clogged solid if I miss these doses.I haven't found anything that works as well as MiraLAX.MiraLAX is a miracle.!

Is there more you can tell me about the nonwhey "Veggie" powders? What about brand or name?

Miralax isn't a laxative. It is a stool cleanser. They affect the bowel in a different way.

I have been on a medication for a long time.I have no choice but to take a laxative for the rest of my life.Miralax is the safest choice and does not promote dependence or tolerance as other laxatives do.I need a dose that creates consistent results that I can rely on every day to avoid an accident.I am experimenting, but it is hard to find a solution that doesn't leave one questioning if they have eliminated completely.Suggestions welcome.

I have the same question, how long can one take it?The directions on the bottle say to take no more than 7 days. How is that to be understood?

Miralax can be taken up to twice a day, according to my doctor.I only use 1/2 of the normal dose when I take it every day.I wonder if it has work for me.After a few days of taking it every day, I can go to once every other day to see how it works and adjust the dosage accordingly.

When your doctor says it's okay, Miralax makes your stools easier to clean.I talked to my doctor about taking Konsyl and Miralax to keep your stools solid and avoid the mess.He agreed to take both.Konsyl is safe to take every day because it is psyllium fiber.Buy Konsyl at Walmart if you do a search for it.

I'm on Miralax twice a day and I use a 16oz bottle that is sturdy plastic and won't begin to get crushed after the first use.
