A store-bought CPAP pillow can cost hundreds of dollars, while they make side sleeping with a mask much more comfortable. You can easily make your own.The easiest and most affordable way to make a mask is to tie a firm pillow. You could put the mask into a foam pillow. If you have basic sewing skills, you can make a custom pillow.
Step 1: Purchase a pillow that is firm.
You can buy a firm pillow at your local store. You can use an old pillow if you don't want to buy a new one.A firm pillow will hold its shape better than a plush one.
Step 2: It needs to be tied two-thirds down from one end.
Use an old dress tie to tie off the pillow so that you can see the mask. The pillow needs to be tied tightly from one end to the other.A dress tie feels better to lie on than string, rope, or twine. If you don't have a dress tie, you can use a soft ribbon or narrow strip of fabric.
Step 3: It should be on the bed vertically.
If you put a pillow on the bed horizontally, the longer sides face the head and foot. The shorter side of the pillow should face the bed's head and foot. The end of the pillow should face the bed's foot.On the one-third section of the pillow, lie down on your side. The tie should make it easy to fit your mask.To find the most comfortable position, adjust the tie's location.
Step 4: You can mark where your mask is by lying on a foam pillow.
Purchase a foam pillow.Measure where the mask makes contact with the pillow by lying on both sides.Take a look at the areas you need to cut out to make room for the mask.Don't mark your mask.
Step 5: There are cutouts for the mask on each side.
Use a carving knife to cut the pillow. You traced the marks on each side. The cutouts for the mask will allow you to sleep on both sides. There is a space at the bottom of the pillow for your shoulder.
Step 6: If you want, you can sew a pillowcase onto it.
If you want, you can sew a case onto the pillow. You can cover it with a standard pillowcase.Make sure the pillowcase is large enough to fit into the shape. The shape of the pillow will be different if the pillowcase is tight.
Step 7: Pick out your fabric and yardage.
Since you will be resting your face on it, choose a fabric that is soft and nice.Between a half yard and a yard of fabric is all you need to make a bed pillow.Prewash your fabric according to its care instructions once you have selected it.
Step 8: There are C-shaped spaces for the mask.
There are two cutouts on each side of a pillow shape. It should be a rectangular shape with two cutouts for the mask on each side.To create the pillow's front and back sides, cut the fabric with shears using the tissue paper form as a guide.
Step 9: Place the pieces of fabric together.
The insides of the pillow face will eventually be placed right side in.You should put the pieces of fabric on top of each other so that they are inside out when you sew them together.Straight pins will allow you to sew the pieces of fabric together.
Step 10: Stitch the sides of the pillow together.
As you work on the three sides of the pillow, keep an eye out for the curves. If you tie a knot at the end of your thread, it won't pull through the fabric. If you use a sewing machine, try not to yank the fabric too hard.Focus on the area just ahead of your stitching needle and gently move the fabric to follow the curve. You can stuff the pillow if you open the fourth side.
Step 11: Put the pillow in.
You can stuff the pillow after stitching three sides. At your local craft or home goods store, you can find a variety of filling options.Pack the filling into the nooks and crannies of the pillow.
Step 12: The fourth side was closed.
Before stitching it closed, you can pin the fourth side.If you want to fit your mask, add or remove filling.Stitch the last side closed after you filled the pillow.
