Is it possible that your boots keep your feet dry but not as warm?If you have some fleece fabric and some sewing supplies, you can make your own boot liners instead of buying a whole new pair of boots. You just need to cut out three pieces for each boot, one for the sole of your foot, another for your leg, and a third to cover the top and sides of the foot.It is a simple matter of sewing them all together. This is a great project for those of you who are new to sewing, because virtually all of your liner will be hidden by your boot.
Step 1: Place your fabric on the floor.
If you want to lay out your fleece fabric on a hard floor, you need to clear some space for the first two pieces.Put your feet on the floor. To keep it as flat as possible, place weights at its corners and sides.Place a hard surface on top of your carpet if you don't already have one.You can place your foot on a raised hard surface like a workbench.
Step 2: Make a diagram of your sole.
Place one foot on top of the fabric. When you trace its outline on the fabric, kneel down on one knee and assume whatever position is comfortable for you while still giving your hand and arm enough space to work around your foot.Use a fabric pencil to draw an outline around the bottom of your foot with an extra inch between its edge and the outline. The extra inch gives you more space to sew your seam so you don't end up with a boot liner that's too small for your foot.
Step 3: Pick up the outline and repeat.
To remove your first piece from the fabric, use fabric scissors to cut along the outline. Each step will lead to the creation of a second piece for your other sole.If you find it easier, you can create your second outline first and then cut both out at the same time.
Step 4: Roll out more fabric.
Continue working on the floor if you are comfortable doing so.Since you won't be using your own feet or legs as guides anymore, feel free to move the fabric to a worktable.Roll out the rest of your fabric if you haven't already done so.
Step 5: Place the boot on top of the fabric by folding it in half.
There are weights on one side of the fabric. You can make a double layer of fabric for the leg of your boot by folding it over. The front of the leg should line up with the fold if you put your boot on top of it.Don't pull the foot off the fabric, you only need the leg.
Step 6: Cut, outline, and repeat.
While keeping its front lined up with the folded edge of fabric, Flatten the boot as much as you can.If you want to draw an exact outline, start at the bottom edge of the fabric and go up and over the folded edge.Attach your outline to your second leg.Cut along the outline, not the fold. You want to keep this intact so that you end up with a single piece of fabric. You don't need a seam allowance since you're tracing along the outside of the boot for a liner that goes inside.
Step 7: The pieces for the cuffs need to be cut out.
Measure the width of the leg piece.Cut out two strips of the same fabric for your cuffs. This is the only part of your liner that people will see, so use a more decorative piece of fabric if you like. The cuff will be sewn along the top of your leg piece so it can fold over your boot, so how big of a cuff you want is up to you.
Step 8: Measure your height and width.
You need to measure three times to create the final pieces.Measure the length of either sole piece and mark that as your bigger height, then measure the width of one of your leg pieces, keeping it folded just like it was before you cut it out.
Step 9: Take more fabric and fold it over.
You need a double layer of fabric connected by a fold just like you did for your leg pieces for the fabric piece that will cover the top and sides of either foot.Determine how long your fold needs to be by using your bigger height. To figure out how far the fabric needs to be folded over, use your width. The top layer of fabric has a rectangular shape on it.
Step 10: You should make your first two cuts.
Cut out the layers of fabric from your outline.Cut the outline, not the fold. Before you cut it out, keep the piece folded over.Place your dominant hand on the folded side. From the top corner of the fold, cut out a half-parabola shape that ends at the bottom corner. The top of the rectangle is where your toes will be.Your heels will be at the bottom. The half-parabola should begin by curving from the top folded corner to the opposite bottom corner.Once you pass the point where your toes will meet your foot, the cut should be almost straight on the opposite bottom corner. You should have a larger piece with the fold intact and two smaller pieces trimmed off.The two smaller pieces can be thrown away.
Step 11: You should make your third and final cut.
Refer to your smaller height measurement first.Measure and mark the distance from the bottom edge to the larger piece.Measure and mark an inch along the bottom edge of your piece from the same bottom corner.Cut a line from the bottom mark up to the smaller height mark on the fold. You should have two pieces, one big and one small. The smaller one can be thrown away. The larger piece should look like the logo from Star Trek.
Step 12: Cut out a second piece.
You need a half-parabola shape for each foot.Simply place your first one on top of your fabric, trace the outline, and then cut it out.You can either spread it out over a single layer or keep the first piece folded over another double layer.
Step 13: The first thing to do is to start with the sole and foot pieces.
Line up the toe ends of a half-parabola piece and a sole piece.Attach the outer edges of the two pieces with sewing pins.Use your sewing machine to sew along the pinned edges with a quarter-inch seam allowance. For your second liner, repeat with your other sole and half-parabola pieces.Do not sew the ends of the half-parabola together at the same time.Leave them open for now. They should look like a pair of shoes when they're finished.
Step 14: The leg should be connected to the inner curve.
Line the folded edge up with the center of the half-parabola.Right there, pin the two together.Place the bottom of each side along the inner curve until you reach either end.Next, sew a seam along the ankle with the other two pieces.Don't pin and sew the back of the leg yet.The leg piece needs to be sewed to the half-parabola.
Step 15: Attach your cuffs to the legs.
Take one of the fabric strips that you cut out for your cuffs and fold it in half.Line up the two open edges with the top of your leg piece, so that the strip's folded edge faces down. Then sew the cuff's two open edges to the very top of the leg.
Step 16: The back should be closed.
When wearing your boots, put on the thickest pair of socks and pants that you expect to wear. You should slip your foot and leg inside your liner. If you want it to fit around you, pull the open ends of the liner back together.Pin the open ends together once you find a comfortable level of tightness.Pull your feet out, close the back, and repeat to complete your project.
