There is an old, scratched, or missing headboard in your bedroom. The centerpiece of your bed is the headboard, so you want it to reflect your personal style and complement the rest of the room.Paint it, use fabric, or add other unique details to make it your own.
Step 1: The headboard needs to be cleaned.
To get the headboard ready for sanding, use a microfiber cloth and soapy water. If it was in an attic, basement, or storage space, this is important. If you are concerned about the material of the headboard, you can use oil soap, which is furniture safe. Most craft stores have oil soap.
Step 2: The glossy surface needs to be removed with sand.
If you want the paint and primer to stick, you need to remove the previous coating on the headboard. The surface of the bed is dull. Most hardware, home improvement, and craft stores have medium-grit sandpaper. It is safe to skip this step if your headboard is already dull.
Step 3: The primer should be applied to prepare the wood.
Primer gives you a blank canvas to work on, which will result in more vibrant colors.Make sure the entire surface of the headboard is covered by applying a coat of primer.Don't worry about seeing brush strokes, it's not necessary to make the primer look perfect. There are different forms of primer, like traditional paint, spray paint and oil-based.All work well for furniture.
Step 4: Sand lightly to get an even finish.
If you want to go over the surface of the headboard, use long, gentle strokes.A smooth surface to paint on will be given by removing bumps and imperfections in the primer. Most hardware, home improvement, and craft stores have fine-grit sandpaper.
Step 5: The headboard should be painted.
If you want to reach tighter places on the headboard, use a paintbrush.Apply an even coat to the larger areas with a roller.Furniture spray paint can be used for quick results. If you want your headboard to blend in, choose a paint color that matches your room.Try painting your headboard black or white for a more contemporary look.Pick a color that is vibrant blue, red, pink, green, or yellow. If you want a bold look, you can color block the headboard by taping the furniture into half or thirds and painting one section at a time.
Step 6: Apply a second coat of sand with fine-grit sandpaper.
Sanding between coats will give you an even finish.Use a brush and roller to apply the second coat. Two coats of paint is enough for darker colors, but a third coat is needed for lighter colors.Sand in between coats.
Step 7: Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.
It takes at least 24 hours for paint to dry.Adding a few hours to your drying time is necessary if you are painting in a warm or humid area.Keep the furniture out of the sun and in aventilated area during this time.
Step 8: There is a seal with furniture wax.
If you want your colors to appear richer, use a wax seal or a polyurethane seal. You can apply it with a brush or roller, no matter what seal you choose.Allow 24 hours for the wax to cure.Wax needs to be reapplied every 3-4 months.
Step 9: Upholster your bed with foam and fabric.
If you want to cover the old foam mattress with fabric, you have to cut it to size.Make sure to completely cover your foam mattress by choosing a fabric that is tear resistant.Attach the fabric to the back of the bed with a staple gun.It is easy to cut the foam to size and secure the fabric with this option. The fabric can bunch and fold with other shapes.Attach buttons to the outside of the fabric and secure them with heavy twine through the back of a headboard by pre-drilling holes into it.Attach the twine to the back of the bed.
Step 10: If you want a less permanent change, drape a rug or cloth over the bed.
If you don't want to cover it with fabric, you can. There are large statement rugs or dynamic printed fabric.Simply drape the rug or fabric over the bed.It is more difficult to paint or upholster brass or iron headboards with rungs. If the rug or fabric falls, you can use mounting strips to hold it in place.
Step 11: Use curtains on your bed.
If your bed is in front of a window, you can hang a curtain rod and curtains to cover it.If not a bit longer, purchase a curtain rod that extends to about the width of your bed.The bed and curtains will look better with this.To avoid seeing the bottom hem, purchase curtains that are long enough to fall behind your bed.You can string lights over the curtain rod.
Step 12: It is easy to apply contact paper for a color change.
marble, wood grain, and solid colors are some of the patterns and colors of contact paper.Measure the headboard and cut your contact paper to size before applying it.If you want the paper to stick, you need to clean the headboard with a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water. To apply the paper evenly, remove the protective paper from the back and apply small sections at a time. You can cut out details with an X-Acto knife.Run a credit card over the paper to smooth it out.
Step 13: Washi tape can be applied to geometric shapes.
There are different colors and patterns of washi tape. You can apply the tape in any pattern you want.Geometric shapes like triangles and diamonds are popular. If you are doing a geometric design, it is helpful to measure and trace the design on the wall in pencil before cutting and applying the tape.In a geometric design, crooked pieces will stand out.
Step 14: Paint the trim or stencil a design.
If you don't want to paint the whole thing, you can use a stencil.Large stencils can be found at most craft stores. If you want a bold and eye-catching look, only paint the trim of the headboard a bright, contrasting color.Make sure you align the stencil each time you move it by working on small sections at a time.If you want to stencil or paint small areas, chalk paint is a great choice.
