Slam books combine the concept of a journal with old-fashioned passing notes. They are books that people pass around to learn more about each other. They should be positive and fun.
Step 1: Purchase a notebook or journal.
Any notebook can work, and these don't have to be expensive. You can buy a simple composition notebook with lined paper inside or a journal with a fancy cover. It is up to you.The goal is to use a book with a lot of blank pages so that people can write in it.How many blank pages you need depends on how many people you want to pass it to.
Step 2: The slam book has a cover.
The cover of your slam book needs to be decorated so that people know what it is.This is where your creativity begins. To write the words "slam book" on the cover of the notebook or journal, use stickers or markers. Some people decorate their slam books with glitter glue and fake gemstones. You can use your artistic talents.Tie a ribbon or string of beads around the slam book to keep it closed.
Step 3: Please include a teacher, parent or adult.
If you are going to be passing a slam book around school, it is a good idea to let the teacher know.Slam books are passed around by some people. It can be passed around other people your age.The slam book's purpose should be explained to the adult. The point of a slam book is to be positive and any negative slams are not allowed.Ask the adults when you can have it.You may agree to only circulate it during recess. The adult should be included in the circulation. It might be interesting to know your teacher's favorite band. Why not?
Step 4: A name page can be created.
The front of your slam book should have people write their names in order. You can figure out which people gave the answers. The number of people you want to sign the book should be listed on the page. There are spaces for 10 names in some slam books.Write the numbers 1 to 10 on the name page if you choose 10.It depends on whether you are trying to keep the slam book among a small group of friends or a larger group.Pick a number and have your friends write their name next to it.Tell your friends to use that number when you answer questions in the slam book.
Step 5: Ask a question at the top of the page.
A classic slam book works this way.You should ask a question at the top of the first blank page in the book.Questions that focus on someone's likes/dislikes or non-embarrassing facts can be written. There are questions with short answers. You can say things like "favorite music artist" or "last trip you took."
Step 6: Try not to be mean.
You should use a slam book to find out more about your friends, including their likes and dislikes.Don't make mean comments about this person. It can cause serious damage to other people.Don't use your slam book to make negative statements about other people. When people are in trouble, it's usually because they went negative.A good rule of thumb is never to write a book about another person that will upset them or that would upset you if it was written about you.
Step 7: The question pages should have numbers on them.
It will help people understand what they are supposed to do when they turn on each page if you do this.Make sure people are aware that they are supposed to answer the question.Sometimes there is confusion with slam books, but usually once the first few people do it, they tell others how it is supposed to be done.If you have created space for 25 names on the name page, you should also create a numbered list from 1 to 25 on each question page.
Step 8: First of all, answer your own questions.
Don't assume everyone knows what a slam book is.You could explain it to your friends. It may end up being shared among other people you haven't explained it to.Answering each question as #1 yourself gives people an example of how it is supposed to work.If you want to explain what each person is supposed to do, you could create a page that says "how this works" on the front of the page. When the final number on the name page list is taken, the book should be returned to you.If people don't know who the slam book is and where to return it, they will never see it again.
Step 9: The slam book can be passed to a friend.
Here is how it works.A friend is supposed to answer questions on each page if you pass the slam book to him.If you filled out #1 already, the friend should tell you that they wrote the answers by writing #1 or #2 on each page.If you chose to number each answer page, they should write their answer after their number.Once your friend #1 answers the questions, they are supposed to pass the slam book to a second friend, who will answer the question on each page and then his or her answer.
Step 10: The slam book needs to be saved.
It will be fun to look back at your slam books with friends as you get older.Slam books capture the vibe of a certain era and some people feel like they are time capsule. It will be interesting to look back at what you wrote a long time ago.Slam books have existed for a long time, and some news sites think it is fun to see what people wrote in the 1980s.Every year is a good time to do a new slam book. The slam book has a year on it.As they age, compare how people's tastes change with new trends.
