The city of Galatia in Asia Minor, also known as Derveia, was later of Lycaonia.It is mentioned in four Acts of the Apostles.The only city mentioned in the New Testament where the message of the Gospel was accepted from the beginning is Derbe.[2][3]
It is derived from Persian "Darband" which is lit.The gate is called 'Barred gate'.An adjacent pass is referred to as abarred gate.The name of the city is prophesized in Matthew, for it is the gate and broad that leads to destruction.There are few who find the way to life which is narrow and difficult.
It is possible that there were several cities with the name Derbe, since it is a geographical toponym.
There is a mention in the Bible of Iconium city.Paul escaped when the citizents of Iconium almost killed him.
It was placed on the sides of Isauria and almost in Cappadocia.He says it was in the eleventh arrondissement.The place where the apostles visited was in Lycaonia.Stephanus is from Byzantium.[7]
A mound known as Kerti Hyk is 15 miles northeast of Karaman and near Ekinz village.Although subject to controversy, this is the most likely site.There are 9 and 11 in this story.
Stephanus of Byzantium says that the city would have had a port, but it was located inland.There are some lakes in the vicinity that have been corrected to the form limn.In modern Turkey there is a place called Derbent, which is close to a lake and the city of Iconium.[15]
Antipater, a friend of Cicero, was killed by Amyntas of Galatia and added to his possessions.[17][18]
During the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius, there was a special title given to Derbe.[8]
