Law and Order: Trial by Jury recap: Ed Green turns in his badges.
Edward Green is a fictional character on the NBC crime drama Law & Order, created by René Balcer and portrayed by Jesse L. Martin. He appeared in two episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and one episode of Criminal Intent.
Ed Green is introduced as the new junior partner of senior detective Lennie Briscoe.Ed's willingness to bend legal rules to arrest a suspect doesn't endeared him to his superiors, and he initially thought Briscoe was too old to investigate crimes effectively.Ed and Lennie disagree about the latter's capabilities.Ed begins to trust and respect his partner, as well as tone down his unconventional investigative methods. He and Briscoe joke about their age differences, as well as Ed's watches and two failed marriages. His number is 3472.[4]
Ed is more affected by his retirement than he expected after they work together on the show for five years. It takes him a while to get to know Joe Fontana, whose style is more abrasive than Briscoe's.Ed deflates some of the tension between Fontana and their lieutenant.[5]
Ed was hospitalized for several weeks after he was shot in the line of duty.He is replaced by Michael Imperioli. The absence of Ed's character from the show was occasioned in the real world by actor Martin sabbatical to reprise his Broadway depiction of Tom Collins in a motion picture version of Rent.
After Fontana retires, Ed is promoted to senior detective.Van Buren thinks that he is too inexperienced to be a homicide detective.Initially, Ed seems to have a similar opinion, but as time goes on, their partnership becomes more solid and they become more friendly with one another.Their relationship is still professional.
Ed is next with Cyrus Lupo. The first case they work together is the suicide of Lupo's brother, and Ed is somewhat reserved in his reaction.Ed is against Lupo working the case, but Van Buren overrules him.Ed seems to become more comfortable with Lupo as he does with his other partners after a short period of time.Ed affectionately calls Lupo "Loops" around mid-season.
Ed was indicted and tried after he was involved in a shooting, but the charges were later dropped.Ed decided to leave the squad even though Van Buren assured him that he was welcome back on the force.Lupo's new partner is Detective Kevin Bernard of the Internal Affairs Bureau, who investigated Ed.
Ed is the L&O franchise's return to the wild, "Dirty Harry" type of character. The character's affinity for gambling is one of the few personal touches made to him.Ed fell back into gambling after Briscoe's death, but he had stopped gambling before.[9]
Ed has mentioned that his family traveled around the world because of his father's work as an oil engineer and that he lived in the Middle East and Cte d'Ivoire. He mentioned that his father has Alzheimer's disease and that he grew up in a religious family. In the episode "Deadlock", Van Buren recommends that Ed's family be protected from an escaped convict, and he responds, "Way ahead of you."They're already in the area.[11]
Ed is a good source of information. He speaks Spanish, Russian, and French and is up to date on popular culture.
He was a police officer in 1994.He worked in the narcotics department in Midtown Manhattan.[16]
In some episodes, racial issues have been connected to Green's character.Stevie Thomas, a black boy whose brother Eric's murder was dismissed and effectively covered up by the police because he was black, was traced to when Briscoe and Green investigated the shooting of a cop.Green spoke to Stevie as a black man and a cop at the same time.At the end of the episode, Van Buren is reminded that while Eric Thomas' death creates guilt for those responsible, Eric is still dead.[17]
In the episode "Prejudice", a racist kills a black man over a taxi.Green tries to arrest the suspect during a search of his apartment. The suspect threw him off and said he would comply only for Briscoe.[18]
Green carries a pistol as his service weapon, like most other detective characters who join the series after 1993.
Green got personal while interviewing a suspect in the case of an abortion of a fetus thought to have Down syndrome.Green told Lupo that he was once engaged to a woman who became pregnant and that they couldn't decide what to do.They ended the pregnancy.[19]
As seen in "Gunplay" (season 15, episode 5), Ed wears medals and service awards.
