If your furniture rattles when you touch it, it needs to be leveled. It is easy to level. If you need to fix a piece of furniture, you can use its legs.If your furniture isn't adjusted, you can either level it temporarily or install a long-term solution. To keep your furniture balanced, adjust it.
Step 1: Determine the furniture's slope using a level.
By looking at the furniture, you may be able to spot it.If you don't know which side is higher, place a bubble level on top of your furniture. The bubble in the center will move towards the higher side if you wait for it to settle. You can use the level to test the furniture again after adjusting it.Once the furniture is even, the bubble will stay in the center of the fluid.
Step 2: Take the drawers out of the furniture.
Some pieces of furniture, like entertainment cabinets, have slots you can use to level them by hand. There are slot holes in the furniture. They can be found inside the door or underneath the drawer. It is possible that your furniture does not have holes. The legs should be kept off the ground by small pads. The pads can be adjusted by hand.
Step 3: You can adjust it with a leveler wrench.
There is a small tool that looks like an L-shaped pipe.Pick the side you want to change.Put the end of the wrench in the hole.Bring it to an appropriate height by starting with the lower side.If you don't have a leveler wrench, use a flat head screwdriver. The slot is located in the hole. You can adjust both legs on most pieces of furniture. You may need to find another way to finish the leveling process if yours doesn't.
Step 4: To lower the furniture, turn the wrench clockwise.
Step back on occasion to see if the furniture is level.Don't raise the furniture too much. You can put back drawers if the sides look even.To lower the furniture if you raise it too much, twist the wrench clockwise.
Step 5: If your furniture has the feet, twist them by hand.
The bottom of your furniture's feet has small, rounded pads screwed into it.The screws allow you to adjust the furniture by lifting up the leg.To raise the leg, turn the foot pad clockwise.Tables, desks, and dressers have feet that can be adjusted. If your furniture has legs that are flat on the ground, it doesn't have adjustability.Check for leveler holes.
Step 6: A level is placed on top of furniture.
Place the bubble level on the furniture you want to level. There is a bubble in the middle of the fluid. You can find out which way the furniture slopes when the bubble moves towards the side that is higher. If you can't rest it on your furniture, have a friend hold the level in place. You can tape it in place. If you are familiar with other levels, you can use them.
Step 7: The furniture has a base.
The small wedges are used to level out furniture. The side you want to raise has a back end.If you lift the furniture up, you'll be able to fit the shim underneath it.If you have a wedge-shaped shim, slide the thinner end first.Unlike feet, there is no need for an installation. You need to adjust them every time you move the furniture, so reserve them for items you don't move frequently. The wood used in the shirs is safe for use on walls or flooring.Hard plastic will provide more support for your furniture.
Step 8: The furniture needs to be level before you stack the shims.
As you work, check your level. You need to give the furniture more height if it isn't level.Push the thicker end of the wedges further into the furniture. You can raise the furniture with multiple shims on top of each other.Lifting up heavy furniture can be dangerous.Make the process easier and safer by working with a friend. There is a stack of shims. It is better than wobbly furniture, but there is no way around it.
Step 9: If the shim sticks out, slice off excess material.
It's a good idea to use the back end of your shims underneath your furniture. This can be unattractive.A sharp utility knife can be used to break a shim.Cut as close to your furniture as possible. The flat head screwdriver can be used to break the shim.To twist off the remaining pieces, Pry the shim up until it breaks. You don't have to break them.Leave them intact if they aren't noticeable. This is usually reserved for wood tools. It may be difficult to break plastic shims.
Step 10: If you don't have shims, use alternative items to level the furniture.
You may have seen wobbly tables in TV shows.A flat object can be used to level out furniture. If you want to make use of items like cardboard or newspaper, slip them underneath the furniture. This isn't the prettiest solution, but it works in a pinch. It can be more difficult to level out your furniture with items like newspaper, which are more delicate.
Step 11: The furniture has a short leg.
Shake the furniture to test the legs. When you let go, notice which leg rattles and stays off the floor. To record the gap, use a tape measure.Extra support is needed for the short leg in order to level the furniture. All the difference can be made by this measurement.
Step 12: Wear safety gear while drilling.
Safety precautions are still important even though you won't need much drilling. It's a good idea to protect your eyes and airways when drilling into wood.baggy clothing and jewelry can be caught by the drill. If you have to, tie your hair back.
Step 13: There are pilot holes in each leg.
If you want to access the legs of your furniture, flip it over. There is a hole to be drilled through the underside of each leg.To make the holes, use the drill bit 8 in (0.95) cm.If you want to install new feet, you have to drill pilot holes. If you don't want to damage antiques, consider leveling with shims.
Step 14: The brass is inserted into the holes.
There are components you can use to make your own custom feet.Ridged rings are used to hold the other foot components in place.Take a brass insert and twist it clockwise until it's all the way inside the feet.If you can't get them in by hand, use a screwdriver or wrench.premade furniture levelers are also available. The steel T-nuts are installed the same way as the brass inserts.A pack of 8 is about 15 dollars. The other option is nail-on glides. You don't need to install inserts to push these into the drill holes. They cost $2 for a pack of 4.
Step 15: The brass insert has an elevator bolt.
Choose bolts with wide, flat heads. The flat heads are necessary if you plan on attaching felt pads.Attach the brass insert with a bolt in the clockwise direction. To level the legs, use the measurement you took earlier. The screw in the short leg can be let out to give it additional height. If you don't need to protect the flooring, you can use machine bolts.Adding washers to the glide on the short leg is necessary if you are using nail-on glides.
Step 16: The felt pad should be placed at the bottom of the bolts.
If the feet don't already have felt pads on them, you should install your own.The bolt heads have the same size pads. All you have to do is peel off the backing of the felt pad and press it to the bolt head. These pads can be found at hardware stores. You can cut your own felt and glue it to the bolt using strong glue.As felt pads wear out, this is a way to replace them.
