Peter Pan costumes are always a hit, whether you are making a Halloween outfit or preparing for a staged production. It is a fantastic last-minute option because it is easy to make the costume. You can make a costume with a few materials and wear it with an impish attitude.
Step 1: Purchase a pair of tights or leggings.
The easiest part of the costume to plan is the tights. If you don't already own a pair, go to a store like Walmart and H&M and buy a dark green or greenish-brown leggings or tights. If you are buying nylon tights, try to buy ones that are opaque. If you don't like wearing tights or leggings, buy a pair of sweatpants or linen pants with a skinny fit.If you don't want to wear long pants, you can wear green cut-off shorts.
Step 2: A green shirt is a good buy.
Purchase a large shirt in a yellow-green color if you don't already own one.Make sure the shirt is large enough to fit in a tunic, ending midway down the thigh.Make sure you try on the shirt before you buy it.A tight shirt won't look as good as a short one because the tunic is an important part of the Peter Pan costume. You can buy a regular T-shirt or polo shirt, or a shirt made from linen or another similar material for a more earthier feel.
Step 3: To mark the shirt, use a pencil.
Peter Pan's tunic has a zig-zag cut along the bottom and sleeves, giving it a playful look.Try on the shirt and use a pen to draw a zig-zag pattern near the hem and around the sleeves. The zig-zag pattern should be close to the edge of the fabric if you are happy with the shirt's size. You can cut the shirt to the length you want if you draw the zig-zag higher up.If the shirt isn't already a V- neck, draw it one more time.
Step 4: Cut along the lines.
Use a pair of scissors to cut along the lines you drew on the shirt after laying it down on a table.Try to cut the shirt in a straight line.If you want to look in a mirror, try the shirt on again.Take the shirt off if you notice that the zig zag is not straight.
Step 5: Pick out your supplies.
You will have to build the cap yourself since it is the most work intensive part of the costume. You will need a sewing machine, green thread, a hot glue gun and a red feather. You can buy art supplies at a variety of stores. If you don't want to sew, you can do a no-sew version of the cap by taking a green beanie and flipping up the edges. To make a good Peter Pan cap, glue a red feather to one side of the beanie.
Step 6: Cut a triangle in half.
Draw a triangle with a pen.Make sure the shape is large enough for your head or the person's head, because it should be roughly the size of the cap as seen from the side. The top tip of the triangle should be curved as opposed to straight and off-center.To estimate the size of the triangle, hold the cloth up to your head.Since the hat isn't going to fit to your head, you just need to get an estimate.
Step 7: A long slanted triangle can be cut.
Draw a shape that is roughly the shape of a knife blade, starting out as rectangular and ending in a pointed tip. This will be the largest part of the hat.Make sure the length of this section is at least 12 inch longer than the rounded triangle you just made.Use a pair of scissors to cut it out.
Step 8: Make copies of the shapes.
Put the rounded triangle and slanted piece of felt down on the rest of the felt.To trace around the shapes, use a pen.You can make copies of the shapes you already made by cutting them out with scissors.
Step 9: The large triangles need to be sewed together.
Put one triangle over the other.Using a needle and thread, sew the two pieces of fabric together along the sides of the triangle, leaving the bottom open. You can use a sewing machine to sew the two pieces together. If your stitches are not perfect, don't worry, you are sewing the inside of the hat.
Step 10: Line up the pieces.
After sewing the body of the cap, flip it to hide your stitches. One of the long slanted pieces of felt should be placed so that it just overlaps the cap on the inside. The strip overlaps around the bottom of the cap.Make sure the thick ends of the fabric are next to each other and the thin ends are touching on the other side.
Step 11: The pieces need to be put in the cap.
Using a needle and thread or a sewing machine, sew the brim piece along the bottom edge of the cap where you pinned it.The overlap is where the two thick sides of the triangle meet.Remove the pins when you are done sewing. To make the brim, flip up the pieces.
Step 12: Glue in the feather.
Put a red feather in the side of the hat.The feather should be pointed at a jaunty angle.Glue it in place when you're happy with the way it looks.
Step 13: Either make or buy a belt.
You will need a few more accessories to pull off the classic Peter Pan look.If you have a brown belt, put it over your green tunic. If you don't want to buy a belt, you can tie a length of brown fabric or rope at your waist.
Step 14: There is a small toy dagger.
Peter Pan has a holster on his belt that holds a dagger.A small toy dagger can be purchased at a Halloween store.Keep it tucked into your belt if it doesn't come with a holster. There is no chance of it hurting you.Don't use a real knife. It is not worth the risk of accidentally poking yourself if you want to pull off a great costume. You can make a dagger out of cardboard and paint it to look like a knife.
Step 15: Wear brown shoes.
You should wear moccasins or short boots with your costume.People will be so impressed with your costume that they probably won't be looking at your feet, even if you do not have the perfect pair of shoes.
