Any outfit can be completed with a bucket hat. They can also protect your hair from the sun.If you don't want to go to the store and buy one, why not own it?They are very easy to make. You can make a new hat if you know what to do.
Step 1: You can pick your fabric.
You need two different colors for the inside and outside of the hat.Consider using cotton for one side and canvas or denim for the other.
Step 2: Cut two circles.
You will need to cut a circle from each fabric. This is the top of the hat.You will be using 12 inch seam allowances. You might want to cut a smaller circle if you have a small head. You will need to cut a bigger circle if you have a larger head.
Step 3: The body pieces have to be cut.
There are two 12 by 3-inch rectangles for each fabric. You should have at least four of them. The rectangles should be 4 inches (10.16 centimeters) wide if you want a taller hat.If you want the circle to measure half of the circumference, cut the bigger circle and smaller circle in half.
Step 4: The pieces can be cut.
You will need four pieces from each fabric. The pieces should be 312 inches wide. They need to be at least 30 centimeters long along the inner curve and 45 centimeters around the outer curve. If you want a bigger brim, cut the arches by 412 inches.Match the inner curve of the brim to the length of your adjusted circle.
Step 5: It's a good idea to cut a piece of fusible interfacing.
If your fabric is thin, you might want to add something.Cut the 12 inch smaller than your pieces, then iron them to the wrong side of the fabric. You only need to do this for the inner or outer fabric pieces.
Step 6: If you want to sew the rectangles, Pin and sew them together.
The two outer rectangles should be pinned together.Use a 12 inch seam allowance to sew up the narrow ends. The two inner fabric pieces need to be repeated.
Step 7: Attach the pieces together.
Pin the two outer pieces together.Go along the narrow, straight ends.Use a 12 inch seam allowance. The two inner fabric pieces need to be repeated.
Step 8: The body and brim pieces should be opened.
Place one of the body pieces on the ironing board.Spread the seam by using your iron. The seam should be open and flat. All of the body and brim pieces need to be repeated.
Step 9: Attach the body parts to the circles.
The outer body piece should be pinned to the outer edge of the matching circle. The wrong side should be facing out.Use a 12 inch seam allowance to sew around the edge. The two inner fabric pieces need to be repeated.
Step 10: The brim should be pinned to the body.
The bottom edge of the body piece should be pinned.Use a 12 inch seam allowance and make sure the wrong sides are facing out.The two inner fabric pieces need to be repeated.
Step 11: Take one hat and put it into the other.
Leave the other one as it is and turn one hat right side out.Tuck the first hat into the second so that the right side is pressed together.
Step 12: You can pin and sew around the outer edge of the brim.
The seam allowance is 12 inch.A wide gap is needed for turning. As you sew, remove the pins.
Step 13: Cut the seams to make them smaller.
The seam around the top of the hat needs to be cut every 34 inch. The seam around the outer edge of the brim needs to be cut every inch. The notch needs to be under 12 inch so that it doesn't cut into the stitching. The body and brim pieces don't need to be cut into the seam.
Step 14: The hat should be turned inside out.
Put one piece of the hat in the other. If you need to push out the seams, use a knitting needle or skewer.
Step 15: Press the gap shut as you Tuck.
The edges of the gap should be Tucked in by 12 inch so that they match up with the rest. When you are done, press the brim flat with an iron.
Step 16: Around the outer edge of the brim is where you want to topstitch.
To get away from the outer edge of the brim, sew 14 to12 inch (0.64 to 1.27 centimeters) away.
Step 17: There are more rows of topstitching.
It will make your hat look more professional if you do this. For 4 to 5 more rows, topstitch around the brim. The gap between the rows should be 12 inch (0.64 to 1.27 centimeters).
Step 18: If you want, topstitch the top and body of the hat.
If you don't have to do this, it will give you a nice touch. The topstitch is 14 inch away from the seam.Next, topstitch around the bottom edge of the body part, which is 14 inch away from the seam.
