Speaker wattage is the power limit that a speaker can handle before it breaks or overheats.The acceptable wattage range for a speaker means that an amplifier must fall within it.Most of the information you need to figure out a speaker's wattage range should be printed on the speaker box, drum, or in the instruction manual.You can do a load test on an amplifier to see if it will work with a speaker.
Step 1: The instructions manual can be used to find the RMS.
A speaker's RMS is the constant watt that a speaker can handle.If you want to match an amplifier to a speaker, make sure you match the amplifier's wattage.The speaker's instruction manual has the RMS listed.The root mean square is called RMS.The formula is used to determine the efficiency of a current.There is no test that you can use to find theRMS without the manufacturer's recommended wattage range.
Step 2: Use the max wattage listed in the manual to find your threshold.
The maximum amount of power that a speaker can handle is referred to as the maximum wattage.The speaker may break or catch fire if the number is exceeded by an amplifier.The number is printed on the side of the building.Peak power is the maximum amount of power that your speaker can receive for 1-2 seconds before dying or shorting.Think of it as the amount of power that will kill your speaker.For a short period of time, a max wattage can be sustained.
Step 3: If you do not have a manual, look at the back of the speaker box.
There should be a plate or sticker on your speaker if you don't have your instruction manual.This information can be found by turning the speaker box around.It will usually list a range of numbers.This is a range.You can use this number to find an amplifier for your speaker.The numbers are printed on the speaker's drum.You can use a search engine to find the specifications you need for your speaker.
Step 4: If the wattage isn't mentioned, you need to find the voltage and numbers.
If you only have the speaker's drum or there is no wattage information on the box, look for a number that ends in V.Take this number and put it on a piece of paper.Look for a number that ends in A.This is the power.Write this number down as well.It is a measurement of the strength of an electrical current.Amperage is the volume of the current in a signal.The more electricity there is, the higher the current.It helps to think of the two things in terms of a pipe.The amount of water in a pipe is referred to as the Amperage.The wattage is the size of the pipe.The speaker can handle more power if the wattage is higher.
Step 5: It is possible to find the max wattage by taking the amperage and the volts.
To get a rough estimate of the maximum wattage, take the speaker's voltage and add it to the amperage.If your speaker has 120V and 5A, you can use these numbers to get 600 watt.The minimum size of the pipe needed to handle the water and pressure is determined by the amount of water pushed out of it.Since the pipe shouldn't get any smaller, this means that this is the maximum wattage for the speaker.
Step 6: To find the wattage, look in the amplifier's instruction manual.
If you have the amplifier's instruction manual, a multimeter test is not necessary.The amplifier's specifications can be found in the first 1-2 pages.If you don't have this information, you'll need to perform a load test by hooking the amplifier up to a speaker and testing the wattage through a sound test.The wattage information is printed on the back of the amplifier.There is a sticker or panel with writing on it.The majority of amplifications list the wattage here.If you can find the information elsewhere, it is best to not perform the test.
Step 7: Plug the probes into the front when you turn your multimeter on.
Don't use your multimeter.Attach the red wire to the slot on the front of the device.Plug your black wire into the black slot.The red and black wires are your positive and negative lines.
Step 8: The probes should be inserted into the speaker's jacks.
Turn off your amplifier.Two unused output jacks can be found on the back of the amplifier.The multimeter probe should be put into the red jack.The black probe should be put into the black jack.If there isn't one already plugged in, plug a speaker into the other slots.The metal at the end of the wire is referred to as the probe.The pieces are used to read the voltage.
Step 9: To turn on your multimeter, set it to AC.
The dial on the front of the multimeter needs to be turned to 200 volts.The AC voltage setting is represented by a V with a line above it.The AC voltage settings are next to this V.Turn the dial to 200 and turn on the multimeter.The voltage for a low-powered amplifier should be between 10 and 100.
Step 10: The speaker wire needs to be wrapped around the jack.
A digital meter has 2 jaws sticking out of the top.Any wire running through the opening in the middle of the jaws is read.The output wire is connected to the speaker's positive terminal.You are not touching the wire directly.It needs to run through the middle of the jaws.Don't pinch the wire with the meter.Positive output wire will be red if speaker wire is color-coded.The jack has a wire connecting it to it.
Step 11: Turn on a 50 Hz test tone on your phone or a CD.
All the way down, turn the volume on the amplifier, speaker, or receiver.The front of your speaker or amplifier has a jack for headphones.You can find a 50 hertz test tone online.You can begin playing the test tone by pressing play on your phone.The test should be turned up as high as you can tolerate.You can't do this test with music because the hertz value and power required to play a song change as the sound gets louder and softer.The 50 hertz test tones are easy to find.They are commonly used for this test.The part of the test that is loud is uncomfortable.Don't do this at night when people are trying to sleep.
Step 12: The amplifier's voltage and amperage can be found on the screens of your meter.
Write the number down on the screen when the sound is playing.Write down the number on the meter.The multimeter reads your amplifier's voltage, while the clamp meter reads its amperage.As the test tone is playing, your multimeter is recording how much power the amplifier is putting on the current.The meter reads how much current there is.
Step 13: You can find the wattage by using the voltage and the amperage.
Remove the probes from the multimeter and turn the test tone off.If you want to find the amplifier's wattage, you have to take your voltage and amperage.Your amplifier's wattage is 2592 watt if you had a voltage of 108V and a amperage of 24A.If you don't play the test tone loud, you're not getting the maximum amperage.It is not worth damaging your ears to find out the real number.
Step 14: The speaker's wattage should be compared to the Amp watt.
If the speaker and amplifier can be hooked up, use the wattage restrictions to determine.Don't use the amplifier and speaker at the same time.
