Need a quick set of curtains, but don't want to fiddle with sewing or patterns? It's an easy way to make a seamless set of curtains without sewing, which is great for beginners and those setting up home for the first time.
Step 1: There is a bed sheet with a wide top hem.
Depending on the look you want, you will need one twin-sized sheet, two twin sized sheets, or one full sized sheet.A twin-sized sheet is 66 by 96 inches.A full-sized sheet is 81 by 96 inches. If you want very full curtains, you can get two twin-sized sheets per panel. If you want skinny curtains, cut a twin-sized sheet in half.If you want standard curtains, cut a full-sized sheet in half.
Step 2: You should wash, dry, and iron the sheets to get rid of lines.
You should wash the sheets according to the directions on the package. If you misplace a package, use a cool wash cycle and a dry cycle.Once the sheets are dry, iron them.
Step 3: Cut the sheet in half.
If you want to turn one bed sheet into two thinner panels, fold the sheet in half and line up the edges.Cut the fold with an iron.
Step 4: If you want a cleaner finish, consider hemming the edges.
You will get a nicer finish if you hem the sheets. The raw edges should be folded inward towards the wrong side of the fabric.Attach iron-on hem tape inside the hem by pressing the fold flat with an iron.Press the hem flat to seal it.You might be able to iron 10 inch sections of iron-on hem tape at a time because of the length you are working with. When you are done, flip the curtain over so that the right side is facing you, and press the hems flat for 3 to 5 seconds. The iron-on hem tape needs to be sealed further.
Step 5: Use a seam ripper to open both ends of the top hem.
Don't pick any other part of the hem's seam, just the sides, because this will create the holes through which the curtain rod will slide.Use curtain rings to hang the sheets onto the curtain rod instead of leaving the top hem alone.
Step 6: The ripped seams should be tucked inside the hem.
Don't use iron-on hem tape, press flat with an iron.
Step 7: Hang your instant curtains by passing the curtain rod through the hems.
If you decided to use curtain rings, simply clip them onto the top hem and pass the curtain rod through the rings.
Step 8: The curtains should be on either side of the window.
Pull the curtains to the outer edges of the window if you have a high ceiling.
Step 9: Matching ribbons can be used as tiebacks.
If you want to prevent fraying of the ribbons, cut each end in half.
Step 10: Measure your windows to see how large you want them to be.
The curtains can fall either past the bottom of the window or all the way down to the floor.
Step 11: To get rid of shrinking and wrinkling, choose your fabric, wash, dry and iron it if necessary.
When buying fabric, read the side of the bolt to find out how to wash it.
Step 12: Cut each panel 12 inches longer and 2 inches wider than you want them to be.
The extra fabric is needed for the seam allowances.
Step 13: Press the hem with an iron after folding it up by 12 inch.
The wrong side of the fabric is where you should be folding. Before you iron it, make sure to put some iron-on hem tape inside the hem.
Step 14: The bottom hem should be folded up by 5 inches.
Place a strip of iron-on hem tape before you press the hem down, and follow the instructions on the package when ironing it.The folded edge of the hem should be aligned with the tape's top edge. You won't have to worry about the edges showing if you fold the hem twice. It is easier to iron 10 inch sections of hem tape at a time.
Step 15: Press flat with an iron as you fold each side hem over twice.
Again, make sure you are folding towards the wrong side of the fabric. There is a piece of iron-on hem tape inside the second set of hems. You can put some iron-on hem tape inside the first set of hems.
Step 16: Attach the top hem with an iron by folding it down by 12 inch.
Again, make sure you are folding towards the wrong side of the fabric. Before you press it with an iron, make sure to put some iron-on hem tape inside the hem.
Step 17: Press flat with an iron when you fold the top hem down again, this time by 6 inches.
Before you press the hem down, insert a strip of iron-on hem tape.Make sure the top edge of the tape is in line with the hem.
Step 18: Press the hems flat if you want to see the right side.
The iron-on hem tape will be fused further.
Step 19: If you want to slide it onto the curtain rod, leave the top hem alone.
This is the easiest way to hang curtains.
Step 20: Attach some tabs to make a self-pleating curtain
The back of the curtain should be facing you.Cut 312 inch (8.89 centimeter) long strips of 2 inch (5.08 centimeters) wide ribbon. The ribbons are 4 inches apart.Attach the top of the ribbon strips to the curtain.Glue the bottom of each ribbon to the top of the curtain to create a bulge. The panels should be on the curtain rod.Pick a ribbon color that matches the curtain color.
Step 21: Hang the curtains.
Attach the curtains by removing the curtain rod from the wall.Place the rod back on the wall when you are done.Place the panels to either side of the window and tie them back with matching ribbon.Pull the curtains to the outer edges of the window instead of hanging them higher up if you have a high ceiling. If you are using curtain rings, clip them onto the top hem and pass the curtain rod through them.Pass the curtain rod through the tabs if you are using ribbon tabs. The curtain rod should be passed through the wide, top hem.
