Oculus Quest 2 release date, price, pre-orders, and specifications are available on Tom's Guide.
A virtual reality headset developed by a division of Facebook was released in May.
Similar to its predecessor, it is a device that can run games and software on the go.It supports six degrees of freedom and uses internal sensors and cameras in the front of the headset. The cameras are used as part of the safety feature "Passthrough", which shows a view from the cameras when the user exits their designated boundary area.A later software update added "Oculus Link", a feature that allows the Quest to be connected to a computer via the internet.[5]
It was praised for its price and convenience, and for having improved graphical fidelity and tracking, but it was panned for the build and graphics quality of its PC-based games. It was criticized for being limited to software on the store and not having compatibility with the Go software.Critics praised the device's increased flexibility and indicated that devices like the Quest would likely replace the PC-only headsets in the future.
A virtual reality headset called "Santa Cruz" was revealed at the 2016 Oculus Connect 3.There was a plan to issue software development kits for the new model in the following year. They also showed off the controllers, which were similar to the ones used in the virtual reality headset.[7]
At Connect 5, it was announced that the new headset would be priced at US$399.It was announced at F8 that the Quest would ship on May 21, 2019.The device was priced at US$499 for the 128 gigabyte version at launch.[10][11]
On September 16, 2020, a successor model was announced. It was released on October 13 and cost $299 for the 64GB version.[13]
A system-on-chip with 4 gigabytes of RAM is used in the Oculus Quest.Four of the chip's lower-power cores are used for motion tracking and other background functions, while the remaining three are reserved for software.Modifications to enhance performance in virtual reality applications are included in the operating system.[3]
A diamond Pentile display is used for each eye, with an individual resolution of 1440 1600 and a refresh rate of 72 Hz.The next generation lens technology used in the headset helps to enlarge the sweet spot of the lens. The god rays are still visible in high contrast scenes.Physical interpupillary distance adjustment is also included.[17]
Unlike the Go, which used a limited handheld remote that only supported limited motion tracking, the Quest supports positional tracking with six degrees of freedom.[19]
Instead of using external sensor cameras in the play area to track the headset and controllers, the game uses an inside-out tracking system called "Oculus Insight".Four wide-angle cameras built into the front of the headset are used to track the IR on the Touch controllers. When the controllers are outside of the cameras' field of view, this is combined with the input from the controller and headset to predict the path of motion. There are 20 and 21 items.
The cameras are used as part of a safety feature called "Passthrough", which displays a grayscale view from the cameras when the player exits their defined playing area.It was announced that the feature would be upgraded to "Passthrough+", which would make it stereo correct. The Passthrough on Demand feature allows the user to quickly access the view by double-tapping the left or right side of the headset.[25]
Hand tracking will be added to the Quest in early 2020 using machine learning, Oculus Insight, and model-based tracking. There are 26 and 27 words.
The hand tracking feature was introduced as an experimental feature in December. It was limited to the main user interface and built-in apps.Adding support for the feature was one of the things that was announced. In May 2020, hand tracking became available for use in third-party software.30
The second- generation Oculus Touch controllers are used. The tracking rings were moved from the back of the controllers to their tops in order to be tracked by the headset's cameras.[31]
External headphones can be used with a pair of 3.5mm audio jacks on each side of the Quest.[32]
It is possible to purchase official in- ear headphones from the company. An official travel case is also included. There are 33 and 34 words.
The 5 m (16 ft) long cable was designed for use with the feature. As the reliability of non-powered USB cords with copper-based wires decreases, the cable is fiber optic instead.[35]
Facebook requires developers to undergo a pre-screening of their concepts to demonstrate "quality and probable market success" in comparison to the other virtual reality companies."App Lab", a new section within the storefront, allows developers to upload and distribute Quest apps without going through the formal review process.Public and invite-based distribution can be supported by the App Lab.[37]
There are over 50 games on the headset, including titles such as Beat Saber, Moss, and Superhot VR.Cross-play is supported in some games with their PC versions.40
In September, it was announced that backward compatibility with over 50 applications and games would be added to the Quest.Through the end of the year, users who had purchased an Oculus Go app would be eligible to download a version of them for free.[41]
The Quest can be used with the software on a PC over the internet. It became available in the public on November 12.Initially, Link only supported one type of connection. In May 2020, support for the newer version of the internet protocol was added.[42]
