We've created a guide to help you understand how sizes work in the world of framing. It can be difficult to get your head around if you've never done it before. We get many questions relating to size of artwork/size of frames, for example, 'I have X size picture, what frame size do I need?'.The answer depends on one or two things.

1.I am about to purchase a piece of artwork and am looking to see if there are any frame sizes that will fit.

3.I'm trying to fill a certain area of wall space and I don't know which frames/sizes will fit in this area.

4.I need a new frame to match the style I already have on the wall.

1.I am about to purchase a piece of artwork and am looking to see if there are any frame sizes that will fit.

The first question is if you would like a mount.Do you mean around the picture inside the frame?Or just a frame?

A mount is simply the purpose-made card border that you often see in framed artwork and photography that surrounds artwork inside frames, and can add an attractive visual impact. Here is an example.

The Nightshade border can be seen in the first image. This sets the image away from the frame and gives more breathing space around it.If you order one, your mount will arrive inside the frame, with a cut out/aperture inside to fit your picture size, and we will send you a smaller one on each side. You can try out our custom print and frame page if you haven't printed your picture yet.

The picture is framed without a mount border in the second image. The image is in the frame. This is a more popular choice when framing larger posters than smaller ones, but this is completely subjective and down to your personal preference.

If you have two prints that are the same size, but you want one of them mounted inside a frame, and the other not mounted, then the overall size of the frames will be different.

The mount around your print will be larger in size than the frame. You have to consider the size of the print and the mount border around it.This would give a bigger measurement than simply 'your print + the width of the frame around your print'.

We offer both frames that are available in ready made sizes as well as the ability to create your own custom size frames and mounts, so which is the best option?Let's look at some scenarios.

You need to find out if you have a standard sized picture or not.If your picture is a standard size, you can buy a ready made frame.

All you have to do is visit our custom frames page, type in the size of your picture you want and ensure you don't mount it.Our frames are made from wood and are available in a huge range of colors and styles.

The easiest way to frame your artwork is to head over to our dedicated page. You can now play with the different styles and colors of frames and mounts. You can use the framing tool to adjust the borders of the mount around your picture, which will allow you to create some striking effects.

As the bigger border sizes around the picture you choose, the larger the frame will be, make sure to keep an eye on the external size of the custom frame.

This is a very popular option with our customers. It is difficult to get your head around for the first time.

To create custom mounts to fit ready made frames, head over to our dedicated page. You need to input the size of the picture in Step 1 'About your picture'.

Step 3 is 'Which frame would you like?' after you have chosen the mount colour and style. Our website has set the outside dimensions. The frame size of your mount should be the same as the ready made frames. It gives a list of the ready made frames that are available for you to use.The standard size frame for your custom mount will equate to the external size of the mount.

The borders around your picture will increase if you increase the frame size.If you want to add the frame and mount to your basket in one go, you can choose from the available list.

If you still don't know which frame style is right for you, take a look at this quick overview. If you'd like a very minimalist look, the Nielsen frames are ideal. The visual effect is due to the fact that they're manufactured in aluminum rather than wood. The artwork sizes are A1 and above. For non-standard artwork sizes, custom frames are ideal, and for situations when you would like wider or bolder frame styles with more flamboyant visual impact. If you would like to talk to us about more advice, please call us.

It's the easiest way to frame artwork.Pick your frame style and mount after you type in the size of your artwork. Our frames are finished in a wide range of styles, including very simply modern black finishes, natural wood (including oak) styles and many more.As soon as the frame arrives, you can put it up on the wall.Take me to custom frames.

A very popular brand of frames. These frames are very narrow and have a contemporary look.

If you don't want a mount around your artwork, take a look at our full list of ready made frame sizes.

If you want a mount around your artwork, inside a standard sized frame, you have to remember that there is less flexibility than with custom frames. We have created a page that will allow you to do this all in one go.

If your artwork would fall through the front of the frame, then the glass/glazing, mount and picture should sit on a lip. This is usually less than 5mm.You will lose about 5mm on each side of the picture if you mount it around the outside of your picture.

When ordering a frame with a mount, please remember that we will reduce the aperture. The cut out is 3mm on each side and 6mm from the overall height. If the aperture was the same size as your artwork, it would be hard to align it.For example:

Actual angle (i.e.Cut out where your artwork will be visible.

If you turn the frame around, you can see the back of it.The back of the frame can be sealed with tape if you want to open it.Measure the size of the glass inside the frame or the backboard to find the correct frame size. When we say frame size, we always refer to the internal size as measured from the back of the frame.

Feel free to call us or send us an email, where our friendly UK-based team are on hand to answer any questions you have.

3.I'm trying to fill a certain area of wall space and I don't know which frames/sizes will fit in this area.

Take a note of the picture size that the frame in question is made to hold, as well as the profile width, which is the difference between the piece of glass/acrylic inside and the internal size. For example:

The wall space figure is 5mm less on each side of the frame, because the frames have to overlap the picture on every side in order to keep the artwork in the front. In your display area, you always have slightly more room to work with.

The situation with custom frames/wall space taken up is the same as ready made frames, except that you can adjust the size of the frame precisely. The page summary on the custom frames page informs you of the external/wall space taken up by your frame.

4.I need a new frame to match the style I already have on the wall.

If you have a matt or glossy frame, note down the colour of it.Measure the width and depth of the frame you already have. The dimensions are from the front of the frame to the wall.If you send us a photograph of the frame, we will try and find one that matches. Our online selection is smaller than our offline one.
