In order to become a Fire Safety Director in New York City, you must pass the written exam.All high-rise business buildings, hotels, and buildings with a two-way voice communication fire alarm system have been required to have a Fire Safety Director since the 1980s.To become an FSD, you need to take a training course, take the written exam, and pass an on-site examination.It can take up to 6 months for the total testing and examination procedure to be completed.
Step 1: You need to take a training course.

Step 7: You can apply for the exam.

Step 8: You have to study for the test.

Step 11: Receive your certificate.
You will receive a document called a Certificate of Completion once you have passed the written examination.Before you can take the On-site Test and complete your requirements, you have to have this document with you.
Step 12: You have to take the On-site test.
At this point, you have passed the written exam, but you still need to take the on-site exam.You can apply to take this at Fire Department Headquarters if you want to become an FSD.You need to submit a copy of the Fire Safety plan to the Hi-Rise unit to complete the application.The application should be completed by 4–5 weeks after the written exam.
Step 13: Take the On-site Test in a building.
Since you will be taking the On-site Test in the specific building that you'll be working in as an FSD, study the building and its Fire Safety plan closely.You should be aware of the fire hazard in and around the building and the built-in fire suppression equipment.
Step 14: The test can be taken on-site.
Over the course of several hours, this will be administered by an inspector.Fire-evacuation scenarios and how to extinguish fires in the building are things that you will be expected to know.To pass the test, you need to know how to operate the elevator and the fire alarm panel.You can take the test again if you fail the first time.After receiving the certificate of completion from the written exam, you have one year to submit the application for your second test.
Step 15: Receive a certificate of fitness.
A certificate of fitness is given to someone who has passed both the written examination and the on-site test.The certificate of fitness is the document that allows you to work in the NYC Fire District.Your certificate will need to be renewed every year.There is a fee for renewing from 60 to 90 days.The renewal fee is raised to $25 after 90 days.
