Jon Hilgenberg fixed the crack in the panel around the sink with a simple fix.
Jon Hilgenberg discovered a crack just to the right of the farmhouse-style sink as he was installing custom kitchen cabinets. The way the panel was assembled made the glue line vulnerable. The panel was attached to the cabinet with glue-up boards. The panel was cut to accept the sink.Thin strips with horizontal grain were found on the sink's sides.
Hilgenberg would like panels for farmhouse-style sinks to have sides with the grain running vertically.Hilgenberg says that instead of making a solid panel, you make a U-shaped piece with horizontal grain on the bottom rail and two vertical stiles.
Replacing the panel meant removing the sink, because the cabinets were installed and the kitchen was nearly complete. He improvised and repaired the brokentile. He used the shims above and below the panel to glue the joint.Hilgenberg filled the flaws with Bondo after the glue dried. He sanded and primed the area with two coats of a primer and then used fine-grit sandpaper to finish the job.He applied two coats of custom-matched paint, which was provided by the cabinet shop, after the primer dried.
