Repotting a large golden barrel cactus is a good idea.

I found a large golden barrel cactus on the clearance rack at Lowe's.It was 13 inches across and was in a 7 gallon container.Since it was filling the nursery container with no room to spare, I knew I would have to repot it fairly soon.

I decided that it was the perfect day to do this job when I woke up on Sunday morning.

The weekend before, I found a great ceramic pot at 50% off and was able to make the potting mix I needed.I used 50% pumice, 25% coir and 25% regular potting soil.

I researched the methods other people use and combined their recommendations into the procedure described below.I wanted the cactus to not be damaged.I enlisted the whole family because I knew I needed help.It was not possible for me to do this on my own, considering how heavy the cactus was.

I added a bunch of newspapers to make sure they didn't get damaged.I asked my daughters to hold down the newspaper so it wouldn't fly away since it was a windy day.

I used a rubber mallet to loosen the root ball on the sides of the nursery container.I put the cactus on top of the newspaper.

The nursery container was carefully removed. The root ball looks great. The cactus was not pot bound.

My wife and I put the wrapped cactus in the new pot. Thanks to the luggage strap, we had to lift the cactus out again because it was too much.We had the correct amount of soil in the bottom of the pot after some trial and error. We put the cactus in the pot, unwrapped it, and filled the container with soil.

The result was perfect. Not a single drop of human blood was spilled thanks to the padding from the newspaper and blankets.

Thanks for that.I'll probably need to repot the one cactus I have in a few years, and now I know a good way to do it.

It's an ideal way to transplant your cacti. The new pot looks like an old one.Excellent!

I still can't believe it.I haven't been back to Lowe's in a while, but will try this week.I was lucky to find this pot at 50% off.The shape is perfect and the colors compliment the golden barrel cactus.I can see the similarities between the two.I don't think they have flower pots.
