Phil has a less illustrious beginning to his military career.He was small, short-legged, and his ROTC captain said he was the worst looking soldier he had ever seen.Even though the Green Hornet makes a devastating splash down, he is still able to land the Super Man after it is riddled with 594 bullet holes.
Phil was injured in the crash and is mostly powerless on the raft.He participates in the quiz show to keep his mind active.Phil is most likely kept alive by keeping mentally active.He almost feeds himself to sharks because he experiences so much guilt.It is a heavy burden to say the least.
