The Philippines gives the Order of National Artists of the Philippines to Filipinos who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine art.National Artists are members of the Order.It was elevated to the status of an order in 2003 after being instituted as an award.[2]
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts and President Ferdinand Marcos's Proclamation No 1001 of April 2, 1972 are the reasons why the Order is administered by the Cultural Center of the Philippines.Fernando Amorsolo was the first recipient of the award.
The order of the highest state honor is given to people who have done a lot for their artistic field.Prior to receiving the award, deserving individuals must have been recommended by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.Such people are called the National Artist of the Philippines by virtue of a Presidential Proclamation.
National Artists have been honored under new categories.When Ramon Valera was nominated for the National Artist for Fashion Design, the category was subsumed under "Architecture, Design and Allied Arts".The category of National Artist for Historical Literature was created by an executive order from the president.
The National Artist of the Philippines is based on a broad set of criteria set by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts.
The short list of nominees is prepared by experts from the different art fields after nominations are submitted to the National Artist secretariat.The final nominees are decided at a Second Deliberation, which is a joint meeting of the Commissioners and the Board of Trustees.The final nominees for the Order of National Artists are proclaimed by the President of the Philippines.[4]
The conferment of the order was delayed due to a controversy.The order was given in a ceremony at Malacaang Palace.[7]
