The Citizen Soldier Resource has an award called the Samuel Sharpe Nomination Award.

The award for any officer or NCO in the Army is the Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe.During my military career, I was able to recommend several people for this award. The award has been around for a long time.It was designed to honor individuals for their service to the corps.

Samuel Sharpe lived in America during the 1600s.He was part of a council that helped the governor and deputy governor with their oversight of the Massachusetts colonies. He was appointed the master of the oda in 1629 and was responsible for the powder, ammunition, fireworks, etc.For the colonies. He was the first Master Gunner in the United States.

The purpose of the Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe is to recognize those individuals who have served the United States Army Ordnance Corps with demonstrated integrity, moral character and professional competence over a sustained period of time.Their contributions to the Corps stand out in the eyes of their peers and seniors.

The criteria is vague. There isn't a rank requirement I can find.I have found that the award is usually reserved for Captains and higher. Some senior Lieutenants who also had enlisted experience received the award, as well as experienced E-5s.You can be nominated if you have at least five years of experience in the Ordnance Corps. It is up to the Association to approve your nomination.

The first O6 officer in the chain of command is the approving authority. The form is sent to the association if there isn't an officer in the chain of command.

You get a certificate and medal when you get approved for the order. The Samuel Sharpe medal depicts an eagle holding a flintlock rifle, surrounded by oak leaves, with a shell and flame overhead. The members of the corps have defended America's freedom since 1812.The flintlock rifle is an example of the materiel support provided by the Ordnance personnel in both peace and war.The oak leaves represent the strength and resolve of the Ordnance Corps. The shell and flame represent the unleashed energy of the Ordnance Corps.

As a small unit leader, you should be aware of this award. If you have squared officers and NCOs working for you, you might want to submit them for this award. It's great for esprit de corps in your unit.Your subordinates will appreciate that you took the time to do it.All you have to do is get your chain of command to approve the nomination.

The Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe is a great award for NCOs.It is designed to honor soldiers for their dedication to the Corps.Samuel Sharpe was an important and patriotic man during the 1600s.Most people don't know about the award. If you have good soldiers working for you, you should use the award to recognize them.

If you have a story to tell, I would love to hear it.Tell us about your experience with the order. If you have any questions, you can post them below.

Is it possible for a Soldiers to receive a second award? Is it possible that the person putting the Solder in didn't know he or she already has one?

I don't know if I was aware of this award while in the military. Is it possible to get this award after military service? Is it possible for a civilian still in the corps to receive this award?

You just need to provide documentation of your service and have a recommendation of 0-6 or higher.

Isn't it a requirement to have a one page write up for this award?Do you have an example letter? Thanks.

I have not done one of these awards in a while. The write up is no longer with me.If I remember correctly, it was on a separate piece of paper.Maybe someone else can say something.

While serving in Afghanistan, I was submitted for this award by my Warrant officer, but within a few weeks my chief got a response saying it needed more said for garrison, and I had been E-5 for 7 years. My Chief thinks I have a lot of years which is not criteria but rather the contribution I make.

I am very sorry to hear that.It sounds like you deserve the recognition, but don't let that hold you back.Great things will come your way if you keep pushing.

I understand that this prestigious award is for the Ordnance Corps, but my question is, can Maintenance MOSs receive this award since they fall under the armory corps?

The award can include your PC's that work in the maintenance fields. The really is no rank requirement but I have always been under my own personnel rules and I want to know if they understand good maintenance and go above and beyond the position they are in to ensure full mission success. We don't want the award to lose it's meaning because it is given out to freely. While you are at it, you may as well promote them if they are doing so well because there is plenty of time in a young soldiers career to get the award.

Thanks for explaining what the award is.It's cool to have a prestigious award that honors a true patriot who helped ensure freedom before our country even declared independence. The Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe must be very proud of anyone who gets it.Being aware of soldiers who do a little bit extra can pay off.

The Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe is a great award.I presented it to a few Soldiers and they appreciated it.

You will have an award commissioned after you, if you are a part of something so powerful and meaningful. That my friend is an accomplishment.Being the first Master Gunner of the United States is a pretty big deal to me.Most of us have forgotten about Samuel Sharpe, but the army is keeping his memory alive.

Samuel Sharpe did a lot of great things. He has been honored and remembered by the Army. The award is called the Ordnance Order of Samuel Sharpe.Several soldiers have received it and they were very proud of it.

Before reading this post, I didn't know who Samuel Sharpe was.It was the first Master Gunner in the US.Any officer or NCO would be honored to receive this award. The eligibility criteria are very vague. The characteristics of a good soldier areintegrity, moral character and professional competence.

The eligibility for the award is not clear. It's a good thing that they leave it at the discretion of the person putting them in for the award.

Samuel Sharpe was the first Master Gunner in the United States. He has an important role to play in military history.

I would like to thank you for this thoughtful post. These awards make good sense, though I was unaware of them.I was invited to participate in the AMEDD Best Medic competitions which serve the same purpose as the award you mentioned, but I didn't know about it.Unit and individual morale are what keeps a unit functioning.

The same award is given to every branch.I agree with you that awards are a great way to raise the bar and bring out the best in your soldiers. If you supervise others, you should take the time to educate yourself about what your branch has to offer so you can put them in for a specialty award if they are deserving.

Over and above the awards for which all soldiers are eligible, most branches within the Army have some form of recognition like this. The post is correct that most people don't know about them.I was honored to receive the Order of St. Maurice last year.I was in an infantry battalion for over a decade and never heard of the Order of St. Maurice until I joined a cavalry squadron. For people who deserve a little extra recognition, they're great, and they mean even more because they are specific to the awardee's career specialty.

Thank you, Daniel. You did a great job getting the Order of St. Maurice.Keep up the good work!
