Cleveland was president when de Lome first arrived.Cuban rebels were fighting for independence from Spain in 1895.The United States and Spain had a good relationship, but President Cleveland was reluctant to get involved in the Cuban conflict.He did a good job of keeping the United States out of Cuba and Spain's business.

President William McKinley took a different path after Cleveland left office.McKinley thought it would be a good idea to sail some of the country's warships through the Caribbean to show their support for Spain.The Maine docked in Havana's harbor after McKinley sent it to Cuba.Spanish Minister de Lome was in agreement with McKinley's decision, but he had different feelings.

In a letter to the Spanish Foreign Minister, de Lome said he was not a fan of McKinley.The contents of the letter were passed from de Lome to Cubans living in the United States.The letter went to the desk of the Secretary of State.Secretary Day showed the letter to McKinley.Most of McKinley's actions were meant to increase his popularity, not to actually make the country better, according to de Lome.

McKinley is weak and a bidder for the admiration of the crowd besides being a would-be politician who tries to leave a door open behind himself while keeping on good terms with the jingoes of his party.

The entire country was aware of the de Lome Letter thanks to the New York Journal.You can imagine America's reaction when the paper exposed the story with the headline 'The Worst Insult to the United States in Its History'.The terrible things de Lome had to say about the president were included in a translated version of the letter.

The President demanded a formal apology from the Spanish government after they insulted McKinley.On February 14, 1898, Spain apologized to McKinley, but its 'I'm sorry' message was short-lived.The Maine was mysteriously sunk in Cuban waters two days later.The United States was on the verge of war with Spain after this incident and de Lome's letter.The two countries were caught up in the Spanish-American War.

The Spanish minister to the United States in the last part of the 19th century was Enrique Dupuy de Lome.He was assigned to his post in the early 19th century.Cleveland kept the U.S. out of the conflict when Cuba was fighting for independence from Spain.William McKinley wanted to remain neutral but decided to support Spain by sending warships through Cuban waters.
