The Department of Defense approved the baseline certifications of 8140 and 8570.
The Department of Defense Directive 8570 has been replaced by the DoDD 8140 and is now a part of a larger initiative.Guidance and procedures for the training, certification, and management of all government employees who conduct Information Assurance functions are provided by DoDD 8140.These people are required to have an approved certification for their job classification.There are certifications required for technical, management, andCSSP classifications.
Any full or part-time military service member, contractor, or local nationals with privileged access to a DoD information system performing information assurance (security) functions, regardless of job or occupational series.
DoDD 8570 became part of DoD 8140.Until the DoDD 8140 manual is approved, DoD personnel will have to meet the requirements.As part of DoDD 8140, more details will be posted.The sections of DoDD 8140 will be based on the Nice Initiative.
The assurance to employers that their employees and contractors can do the job they are assigned to do is provided by the GIAC Certifications Program.The pragmatics of Audit, Security, Operations, Management and Software Security are tested by GIAC.
Rather than taking a one-size fits all approach to IT Security, the family of GIAC certifications target actual job-based skill sets.Many of GIAC's certifications are recognized under the DoDD 8570 program.
The specific skills of security professionals and developers with standards that were developed using the highest benchmarks in the industry can be verified through the GIAC certification process.The IT Security industry has over 22,000 certified professionals.
The exams are open book and timed.The exams are computer based and must be taken in a proctored environment.You can find more information at www.giac.org/proctor.
SANS training courses do not include GIAC exams.You can register for an exam separately or add a certification to your training order.
