The difference between blends and digraphs is what this reading mama is about.

Have you ever heard blend or digraph? What is the difference between blends and digraphs?I am so happy you asked!

There are a lot of terms that can be hard to understand. There are no exceptions to blend and digraph.Let's talk about the differences quickly.

You can download the free posters at the end of the post. They come in a variety of colors.

A blend is when two vowels come together.Think about the sl in the slide. You can hear the sounds of the s and l in the word slide.

There are several blends. Some are found only at the beginning of words, some are only found at end ofwords, and some can be found in either place. They include:

A digraph is two vowels that make one sound.Think about the meaning of the word sheep. You can hear that sound.

Some people think qu is a digraph while others think it's a blend. The last two sounds are final ng and nk.I like to teach them as welded sounds or sound chunks with a vowels before them.

Don't get hung up on what you call tricky letter combinations. It is more important to teach kids how to use them in their reading and spelling than it is to call them a blend or digraph.
