The compression part of RICE, also known as rest, ice, compression and elevation, is the gold standard of first aid treatment for injuries. The most common brand name for an elastic bandage is ACE.

The bandages are usually 2 to 6 inches in width. The bigger the bandage, the more compression you get.For an adult arm or leg, you want to use a 3- or 4-inch bandage.

It's a good idea to use elastic bandages to keep swelling down. There is a limit to how long an injury can be treated.Blood flow to the injured area needs to increase to encourage healing.

Don't wrap the bandages tightly. The idea is not to block the flow of blood.

Don't wrap an ankle or a knee with an elastic bandage to keep it from getting injured again.Support isn't provided by elastic bandages, they're just for compression.

Similar to an elastic bandage, self-adherent compression bandages provide compression. They are able to act like tape without sticking to the skin. These wraps can be torn to the length the rescuer needs and they are capable of wrapping tight enough to be an adequate tourniquet.

In sports settings, self-adherent compression wraps can be found in several different sizes.Since they act like tape, they can be used in a first aid kit.

An elastic bandage is not as springy as a Gauze Wrap. They are not used much for compression because they don't get tight enough.

None of these options would make a good tourniquet.Tourniquets should be used to stop the flow of blood to certain parts of the body.

Knowing how to choose the right compression bandage for a wrist or ankle injury is likely to be a challenge. You can use compression bandages to heal minor injuries.
