The Frugal Crafter talks about the use of basic and disperse dyes with Acrylic yarn or fabric.
Do you have a lot of white or pastel colored yarn?I will show you how cheap it is to use the tips in this video.
If you want a deeper color, you can sop up some of the dripped paint and move the yarn to keep the paint from pooling.A hair dryer can be used to speed up the drying process.Happy crafting and having fun with your new yarn.
Cool!I found a pattern for a scarf that looked pretty and got to try it with some purple.
Is there anything you don't know?I don't think I'll use this idea any time soon, but I will definitely remember it.Thanks.
This is a great idea.I have lots of supplies of paint because I paint with them all the time. This tip will help me die my yarn for these types of projects because last year I couldn't find 4ply yarn in white, pale pink/blue, so I wanted to knit a bunny egg cosy. The back of a dining chair was always used to wind a ball of wool from a skein.
Lindsay, thanks for the tip.I guess you wouldn't be able to wash anything knitted from this wool, or is it permenant once dry?
I never knew how to roll the yarn without it tangling.
I would like to thank you for making this video; I enjoy watching and listening to you.I have restrictions on how much can be spent on my fixed income.I would love to find a lot of yarn for that price.I am not sure if there is a Martins here.Do you have any ideas?
It might be a good idea to start with pound bags of mill ends from our local ACmoore.I think you need to get them in store because you can't pick what you get online.I was surprised when I saw good quality cheap yarn at wal mart, the Hoemtown USA is bulky and I can make a hart with one ball and it is $3 vrs almost $5 for the exact ball of yarn.If you call around, you can find bags of yarn donated by the Salvation army, Goodwill or other thrift stores.I like to stay out of yard sales but if you have friends who do, keep an eye on them. When I find a good deal, I stock up on Mardens, a Maine only chain of stores. There are websites that sell discontinued yarn, but you have to check to see if it is something you want.Good luck to my frugal friend!
Hi!My dream colourway is drying as we speak, I was wondering how fast this dying process is.How likely is it that the colour of my socks will transfer to my feet?I like stripy socks, but I don't want them on my feet.
It will not transfer. As the paint dries, it is not re-soluble and goes through a chemical change.
Thank you for sharing the idea, I was so excited to try it.The process works well and I have been experimenting with different yarns and colourways.I love it!See my last three posts for how I got on.
This is a great video!I am looking forward to trying this technique.I mostly knit for dolls.I am concerned that some of the color would transfer to the dolls body. There are many dyes that transfer to the plastic. There are color marks left by plastic shoes. What do you think? Is it safe for dolls?
Some have inquired about dolls and skin, but what about other fabrics?I have a cardigan that I just finished knitting and even though it was all the same dye lot, one of the balls looked more pink than the other three.I was thinking of making it gray or something similar, but I don't want the color to transfer to the shirt I'm wearing under the cardigan.
I don't want to transfer if you let it dry completely after death. It can be washed and dried to be extra safe. The paint goes through a chemical change after it has dried. Before dying the sweater, I would knit a swatch of leftover yearn and dry it to see if you like it.If you want a more solid dye, make sure the look is right before committing the entire garment.
I was given a pretty crocheted cape.I want to make it black.Do you think your technique would work on a crocheted item?
There is only one problem with getting a consistent color. It would be easier to go from peach to orange if the dye skips in the tight weave area of the stitches. It's a big jump from peach to black.
I enjoyed your video on dying yarn, it is a very useful thing to know.
Great video!I want to dye my yarn in more than one color. Is it possible to use more than one color at a time?Do you think it would blend too much?
If you put the yarn on a garbage bag outside and let it dry in the sun, it will work.
It worked.I dried mine for a week. The rest of the house is in the basement.I soaked it in fabric softener and water to make it softer.I washed and dried. It did lighten considerably but compared to the ugly cream color that the yarn was to start with it was a huge improvement.I took a picture but I can't find a place to post it here so I'll put it on my board.I had tried dying my yarn with Kool-Aid but it didn't work out.
This video is amazing.Thank you so much for putting it up!How will I know if there is enough water left?It looked like the paint was draining out of the yarn I was dyeing.
Thank you so much.I didn't have any purple fuzzy yarn. The store didn't have the right color.I was told that the yarn would have to be wool or natural fiber.I was discouraged until I read your article. The yarn should be dry in a couple of days.Thank you so much!Really enjoy it.I used the closed caption of the video to make a print.I like to read and reference.I made a few changes to it and will finish it soon.If you want, I can give you a copy.
Hi!Thank you for the great video.Would it be a good idea for a baby blanket? You mentioned how the yarn stiffens.
I want to share the fun with you because you may have saved my life.I have about 6 skeins of mustard yellow yarn.I will be happy if this works.I will know what to try next if I go to an aqua color first. Thanks!!
