The board game The Settlers of Catan has won a number of awards. If you want to play with more people, a 6-7 player expansion is available. The game board in Catan is different, you can use multiple strategies to win, and there are many variations to the rules. You can learn how to play a game called Settlers of Catan.
Step 1: You should check to see that you have all the components of the game.
You should check to see that you have everything. It will help you to become more familiar with the game pieces and parts. There are 19 terrain hexes, including four sheep, four wheat, and four wood. There are six sea frame pieces. There are 18 circular number token.A man is a pawn. There are four sets of wooden player pieces that contain five settlements, four cities, and 15 roads. There are 25 development cards with 14 knight/soldier cards and 6 progress cards. The desert is not included in the resource cards of each terrain.Four cards are used for each player."Largest Army" and "Longest Road" are award cards. Two dice, one red and one yellow.Extra harbor pieces can be used for random harbors.
Step 2: Understand the goal of the game.
The object of Catan is to be the first to get 10 victory points.Building structures, buying cards, and earning accomplishment cards are how points are earned. Each settlement is worth a victory point. Each victory point is worth one card. There are two victory points for each special card. The first person to build a continuous five roads will be awarded the longest road card.Whenever a player's number of connecting roads surpasses the longest continuous road of the cardholder, the card will switch hands. The first person to play three "Knight" cards will be awarded the "Largest Army" card.Whenever a player plays more "Knight" cards than the "Largest Army" card, the card will switch hands.
Step 3: The outer frame is what you make.
Place the outer frame pieces before you lay down the hexes. There is a small number on the edges of each frame. The frames should be put together by matching the numbers.
Step 4: Put the hexes.
The edges of the frame should be touching the sea frame. All of the terrain hexes fill are inside the frame when you reach the center. To make the game easier, you may want to place the desert hex on an outside edge, away from any trade ports. It is possible to place all of the hexes face down. When someone places a road or settlement on that hex, they may be turned upwards.
Step 5: You should place the token.
There is a small letter above the token's number.Place the number token with the letter "A" on one of the edge terrain hexes, put the token "B" to the right of first placed token, and continue on putting down token in alphabetical order until you reach the center. All of the terrain should have a token on it.The numbers determine which resources will be used.Do not put a number on it.The game will be more challenging if you place token at random without paying attention to the letters.
Step 6: Place the person who is going to steal.
The bandit should be on the desert tile. The small gray piece resembles a bowling pin. When someone rolls a seven or plays a Knight card, the bandit may be moved.
Step 7: The cards should be placed.
The development cards should be placed near the board where they are easy to find by all players. The development cards should be separate from the resource cards. The resource cards should be placed in five piles facing up and the development cards in a separate pile facing down. The development cards should be shuffled, but not the resource cards.
Step 8: Determine the order of the turn.
The player rolls two dice. The player who rolls the highest number takes the first turn. The Base Catan 3-4 player set has four colors: red, blue, white, and orange. After the player with the highest dice roll has chosen his or her color, have everyone else do the same.Progress is turned in a clockwise manner.
Step 9: The first settlements should be located there.
The first player places one of his settlements at an intersection, where three terrain hexes meet, and the adjoininghexes are the resources he will earn if the number on that hex is rolled. One of his roads will be next to one of the three possible places. The next player must place her settlement in a different area after taking her turn. The player's settlement must always have roads placed where two hexes meet.A settlement can't be placed on an intersection next to another. There needs to be at least two roads between the settlements.
Step 10: The final settlements are placed.
The last player gets to place two settlements and two roads (one for each settlement) and then going counter-clockwise, the first players place their second settlement and second road.
Step 11: Receive your first resource cards.
After all the players have placed their settlements and roads, you get some resources to start. Each of your two settlements has a resource card for each tile.If one of your settlements is near wheat, lumber, and sheep tile, then you get to take one wheat card, one lumber card and one sheep card.Do the same for both settlements.
Step 12: The dice should be rolled.
Each player's settlement will have three numbers on it.If the number that is rolled corresponds to a player's settlement number, that player gets to pick up a resource card from that terrain. The same is true for a player with a city, except that they would get to pick up two resource cards. If you have more than one settlement, you will get more resource cards. If there are two settlements on the edges of a hex and the number is rolled, then you will get two of that hex's resource cards.Resource cards are available to all players if they roll the dice.If a number is rolled by another player, you will get a resource card. The only exception is if the bandit is on your car.You can't get any resources from that hex until someone moves the robber again.
Step 13: You should take your turn.
After the dice are rolled, the player has the option of either building structures like roads or upgrading settlements to cities, playing a development card, or trading.Players have the option to do all or none of these actions. The player passes the dice to the right after taking his or her actions. You can only play one card per turn.
Step 14: There are structures to build.
During their turn, players can use resources to build structures, such as roads and settlements. To figure out what you can build with the resources you have, look at your building cost card. You have to upgrade settlements to cities if you want them to be worth 1 point. You have to have a settlement before you can build a city.To build a road, you need wood, brick, sheep, and wheat. It is only possible to build cities in place of an existing settlement. You need one sheep, one wheat, and one Ore to buy a development card.
Step 15: A development card is what you should play.
At the beginning or end of their turn, players may play development cards. The effects of development cards are clearly stated on the card.A "Knight" card allows a player to move the robber to any spot on the board and then get to take a card from any player that has a settlement or city on a blocked resource.A player can place two roads on the board with a "Road Building" card.A player can get any two resource cards from a "Year of Plenty" card.A player announces one type of resource after playing the "Monopoly" card.Every player has to give that player all of that type of card. The player gets one victory point with a "Victory Point" card.
Step 16: Each card type has a different function, so pay attention to the instructions on the development cards.
If you play a knight card, you need to move the robber right away. You can move the robber to any hex and collect one resource from the opponent. You can choose who to rob if there are two opponents with the same settlement.Keep any victory point cards that you draw face down.
Step 17: As necessary, trade.
The player can trade resources with other players or with the bank.Four of the same resource card can be traded for any other card.If a player is on a special harbor, they can trade in two of the harbor's resources for a card.Three of the same resource card can be traded at a generic harbor.
Step 18: It's time to watch out for sevens.
Each player must make sure that they don't have more than seven cards in their hand if a player rolls a seven. If a player has more than seven cards, they must discard half of them. The person that rolled the seven gets to put the robber on whatever number token he/she wants, and then they can take one card from any player that has a settlement or city that touches the terrain. The robber blocks players from getting resources. If the number occupied by the robber is rolled, players with settlements or cities on that number don't get to collect the resources they are blocking.
Step 19: You can use strategy to increase your chances of winning.
You can use a number of strategies to win the game. The most basic strategy is to get your starting settlement in an area that gives you access to the most commonly rolled resources.Setting yourself up to build roads and settlements by aiming for lots of brick and wood hexes in the beginning is one of the other strategies. There are ports that are monopolizing.Try to get a port and at least two cities on the same hexes so that you can trade for whatever you need. The winning player can be targeted with the robber and Knight cards.Robbing your opponents can keep them from progressing too much. You should build cities and settlements as soon as possible. You'll be able to trade and build with lots of resources.
Step 20: When you have 10 victory points.
If you want to win the game, you need to be the first one to get 10 victory points. You should announce it to your fellow players once you achieve this number.Your victory points cards and any special cards, such as the Longest Road or the Largest Army, will count towards your 10 point total. As you play the game, keep a running total of your points. You can play until someone gets a higher number of points, like 12 or 14 points.
