They make an outfit look more polished. The cost of hiring a professional tailor to fit loose-fitting trousers can be high. It's easy to improve the fit of your pants and save some money by doing it yourself. You just need to cut and pin the fabric and sew a new seam.
Step 1: Put the pants back on.
Put on the pants if you want to taper them for yourself, or have the person put them on for you.The pants need to be turned inside out. After sewing, you will need to draw a line on them.It is easier to cut the fabric and sew the new seam if the pants are turned inside out.
Step 2: The edges of the pants should be pinched.
To find where you want to put the pants, pinch along the inside and outside of them.Depending on the fit you want, you may need to remove a significant amount of fabric. To find the best fit, pinch the pants along the inner and outer seams. To find the best place to create a new seam, pinch the fabric on the inside and outside of your knee.
Step 3: A friend should draw a line where you want a new seam to be.
It will be difficult to draw on the pants while you are wearing them, so it is best to ask a friend for help. They should draw on the inside of where you are pinching the pantlegs. It is possible to mark the fabric yourself, but you will need to pinch it to get the best results.
Step 4: If you don't have anyone to help you, draw a line with pins.
If you don't have anyone who can help you by drawing a line where you are pinching, you can also put pins in the areas you want to taper the pant legs. You should put a pin in every 1 to 2 inches where you want the pants to be.After you remove the pants, draw a chalk line on the pins. The pins should be parallel to the seam.It will be easier to create a seam line after removing pants.
Step 5: Take a pair of trousers and lay them over the other.
Lay the pants out flat and place a pair of pants over them.Take the outline of the pants and put it on your pants.Pick a pair of trousers that fit you well. The fit of these pants will be mimicked on your trousers.
Step 6: Check the lines with a ruler after drawing them.
Go over any crooked spots with the chalk if you hold the ruler up against the line. You can use a ruler to check the distance from the edge of the pants to the lines. The right and left legs should be the same size.If the lines are 1.5 inches from the edges at the bottom of the trousers on one leg, they should be the same on the other leg.
Step 7: The old stitches can be taken out with a seam ripper.
To cut the stitches, keep the pants turned inside out and use a seam ripper.Run the hooked part of the seam ripper along the stitches to sever them and then gently pull apart the fabric at the seams to loosen them.Pull out the thread with your fingers. You don't have to remove all of the stitches if you are not tapering the leg.If you want to take in the seam, just remove the stitches.
Step 8: Draw a second chalk line from the first one.
Line up the raw edges after the old stitches are out.Draw a second chalk line from the first one.You may need to iron the fabric if it won't lay flat.
Step 9: Cut along the second chalk line to remove the excess fabric.
The new raw edge for the parts of the pants you want to taper is the second line you drew onto the fabric. The fabric should be cut along this line.To cut straight along the lines, use a sharp pair of scissors.
Step 10: The fabric should be pinned along the first line.
Place pins along the first line you drew on the fabric after cutting it.This is the new seam for your pants. To keep the fabric together while you sew, insert a pin every 3 inches along the line. The pins should be placed at the edge of the fabric. It will be easier to remove them as you sew.For the other lines, repeat this.
Step 11: You need to thread your sewing machine.
The seams on your trousers need a strong thread. If you are going to make the trousers slim or skinny, the seams need to be strong.Pick a thread color that matches the color of your fabric, such as black thread for black pants. It is possible to use a denim thread for a strong option.
Step 12: The sewing machine should be set to the straight stitch setting.
It is easy to use the straight stitch for sewing seam on pantlegs. The first setting on sewing machines is usually this stitch. If you want to use the straight stitch, make sure your sewing machine is set to the recommended tension and stitch length.
Step 13: The first line of the fabric should be straight.
Attach your fabric to the line. From the bottom of the pantleg, sew up.If the line goes off the edge of your pants, then sew it back on.If the line goes all the way up the pantleg, then sew it to the crotch. As you go, make sure to remove the pins. You may damage your sewing machine if you sew over them.
Step 14: Backstitch
To backstitch, use the lever on the side of your sewing machine to apply gentle pressure to the pedal. You can sew in the opposite direction if you reverse the direction of the feed dogs. For about 1 to 2 inches, backstitch.Release the lever and sew to the end of the line again. The ends of your stitches will be strengthened by backstitching.
Step 15: The process for the other leg should be repeated.
After sewing the lines on the first pantleg, sew the other one.If you repeat the process, both pantlegs will have the same amount of tapering.
