The ONT Power Source and Fiber Question is part of the AT&T Community forums.
The background-color is important.
The apartment I moved into is wired for ATT fiber. The ONT is located in my closet and has a patch panel wired into the 4 wall ports in the apartment.I'm assuming the apartment designer intended for the tenants to simply purchase ATT fiber services, install the modem in the closet connected to the fiber ONT and then if needed, wire the 4 Ethernet ports to their modem.
The problem is here.I chose "Internet 50" which doesn't specifically advertise as being provided by fiber, unlike the faster packages that do specifically mention it.Does that mean I have to pay more for the higher end packages since the only way to get a connection to my apartment is through the fiber line?Is the internet provided by fiber?
The kit I received from ATT included a modem, 2 yellow Ethernet cables, and a power source. Will I need a power source for my ONT if I upgrade to a fiber internet plan?Where can I find the ONT power source?I think that when the previous tenant moved out, the apartment was cleaned and the ONT power source was removed from the closet.

A large white box with a white power cable is needed for power if your unit has the large ONT.
That's a start. Before receiving my modem and other equipment from ATT, my ONT only had one cable going into it, the fiber line. There is an 8 port patch panel beneath my ONT which is mounted within a door covered panel on the wall. This is where the fiber line goes through my wall and ends up in my ONT.The only power source connected to the ONT was the fiber line.
I only have 4 wall mounted ports in my apartment, and only 4 of them are wired.
It is possible that you will hit all 4 jacks in the apartment. The patch blocks installed by the low voltage companies only pass voice over internet protocol. It's possible to use it to pass data, but I'm pretty sure it won't work.A cheap 4 or 6 port Ethernet switch would do the trick.
I won't be using this image because it shows the ONT and the patch panel.I found the ONT without a power supply.
That is the province of Ontario. The power cable and the white lid that protects the fiber are missing.
Let them know that you don't have a power cable. They might have to send a technician to get you set up.
It's not clear why they allowed you to do a self install in the first place. It's not enough to just have the apartment wired in the past, but to also have a powered on working ONT before a self install is authorized.
I might be able to see if the apartment manager has a power source and cover.
I've already called to request a tech to come out and figure out what's going on and they'll be out on Saturday, December 9th, which was the first available date.I received a notice that my internet activation would be this Saturday, Dec. 9th, instead of Tuesday, December 5th.Is this related to the tech visit? If I hooked everything up before Saturday, would the internet not work?
If you found the power cable, you could call in and try and get them to push the order to the current day, as well as canceling the technician dispatch.
The internet should start as soon as the modem boots and boots again, if you've already registered. If you can't access the internet on your network, register at lsreg.att.net.
Since the ONT power cord is missing from my apartment and I have nothing to do with it being missing, that qualifies as a failed CSI?99$ to have a technician come out and give me a power cable when I could probably just use a generic power source with the same plug type and voltage+amperage outputs.
Just an update, today I get back to my apartment and there's a box from ATT with the same equipment in it as I received on Tuesday, just less one Ethernet cord comically enough.I have duplicate of everything, but not the power cord to the ONT.My activation time is after the window when the technician is supposed to show up, even though I tried to talk to ATT customer service. It's crazy that my activation date jumped from Tuesday to Saturday.
This has been more of a hassle than it should have been, I apologize for the rant.I appreciate everyone's help and input.
I've been dealing with this issue.I am aware of your frustration.I had to go to Best Buy to get a universal power supply with different tips. The ONT doesn't say if it's 5v, 9v or 12v.Customer service on the phone is useless. The operator doesn't know what she's talking about, even if she asks her manager
I got further when they suggested I buy it at an AT&T store.I visited 3 of them before they closed so I could find out if they sell U-Verse equipment. The generic cable was bought at Best Buy.
