In the spring of each year, the Monkey Grass, also known as mondo grass, begins to grow.Since monkey grass grows out of where you planted it, it's perfect for transplant. In shady areas, replant chunks of the plant, including the roots. It's a good idea to plant multiple clumps of grass far apart.
Step 1: There is a spot with a complete shade.
There is no need for full sunlight to grow the monkey grass.Too much sun harms it.It can be planted against your house or deck.Pick a spot that is shaded more than it is in the sun.
Step 2: Old weeds and growth need to be cleared.
Pull the weeds from the area you want to plant. The monkey grass room can be expanded. When you turn the soil over, the root system will break up more if you pull most of the weed out.It is okay to leave actual plants in the area, because monkey grass grows well next to other plants.
Step 3: To loosen the soil, chop it up.
The soil that is packed down needs to be turned over.To loosen the soil, use a shovel, hoe, or tiller.Water the soil before and during the process of turning it over if it is dry.Don't worry about tilling the area again if you've done it in the past.
Step 4: Compost or manure can be added to the soil.
As you chop the soil to create better drainage, mix some rotten brown matter compost or manure into it.The compost should be less than half of the mixture.
Step 5: The monkey grass can be replanted in the early spring.
If you live in a place with cold winters, the monkey grass will not grow in the winter. The plant comes out of its dormancy after the final thaw. It's best to transplant right around this time.If you don't have any monkey grass growing yet, you should plant seeds.
Step 6: Attach the roots of the clump of monkey grass to the ground.
New grass grows when you replant a small amount of the plant. To create new growth, the clump needs to be a few inches wide. You can buy monkey grass at the garden center.Carefully pulling the plant out of the container is all you have to do.
Step 7: Get rid of the plant's roots.
Use your hands to dig a large hole in the prepared soil that will hold the root system of the monkey grass.Pack the extra dirt tightly around the plant.
Step 8: Each clump has one foot apart.
You can plant a clump of monkey grass and it will spread.Leave room for the grass to spread out when you are planting a lot of monkey grass. It is a good idea to plant monkey grass somewhere with defined boundaries so it doesn't grow out of control. The monkey grass needs to be divided every few years to keep it in its original location.
Step 9: Water newly planted grass at least two or three times a week.
The soil in a shady area retains more water than it would in full sun.The grass needs more water to take root in the new soil.Make sure the ground stays moist by not soaking it.
Step 10: The grass should be trimmed early in the spring.
During the winter, monkey grass tends to stay the same length as it was during the growing season. Before new shoots come up, you should trim the grass. It's better to trim a little earlier than to wait too long.
Step 11: The grass can be cut down to about one inch.
Hand shears are the best option for small patches of grass. If the grass is more than a foot (30 cm) long, use a weed eater, string trimmer, or even a mower to knock it down.Don't cut it all the way down to the ground level. You can adjust the height to your liking. The sweet spot is between one and six inches. The measurement is 2.5 cm to 15 cm.
Step 12: After you trim the grass, you shouldfertilize the soil.
Monkey grass doesn't need much in the way of fertilization. If you want to spur its healthy growth at the start of the year, apply a long term balanced 10-10-10fertilizer that is formulated to release slowly.Slow-release is the name of theFertilizer you will want.
Step 13: Water the grass occasionally.
This type of grass doesn't need to be watered often. If the grass seems to be starting to turn brown, only water it for a few days. When you choose to water it, give it lots of water.
