The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company is an American multinational company that operates a luxury hotel chain.There are over 30,000 rooms in the company's luxury hotels and resorts in 30 countries and territories.[2][3]

When the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Boston, Massachusetts was sold, the current company was founded.The brand was expanded to other locations.Marriott International is the parent company of the company.[4]

The story of the Ritz-Carlton brand begins with César Ritz, who was the "king of hoteliers and hotelier to kings."The Carlton Hotel in London and The Ritz in Paris were redefined by him.He and the renowned chef from his hotels opened a la carte restaurants on two ocean liners.The restaurants on those ships stopped serving food in 1914.Marie continued the tradition of opening hotels in Ritz's name after he died.[19]

Albert Keller bought and franchised the name Ritz-Carlton in the United States.The first Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the US opened in New York City.It was located at 46th Street and Madison Avenue.The kitchens were run by Louis Diat.The Ritz company wanted to expand to Philadelphia and Atlantic City.The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia was designed by Warren & Wetmore.The Ritz-Carlton Montreal was not owned by Keller as it was located in Canada.The Ritz-Carlton Atlantic City opened in 1921.[26]

A partnership called The Ritz-Arlington Trust was formed in October of 1926 when Edward N. Wyner bought a third-acre parcel at the corner of Arlington and Newbury streets.

The trust sold bonds to finance the construction of an apartment building.The brick building designed by Blodget & Law Architects was far taller than any other building along the street at the time.The Ritz-Carlton Hotel opened in 1927 after Wyner was persuaded by James Michael Curley to make it a world-class, 300-room hotel.Room rates ranged from $5 to $15 per night.

The stock market crash of 1929 brought financial difficulties after a hugely successful opening.The Wyner family funded the hotel's operating losses during the early 1930s.Wyner turned on the lights in every guest room to make it appear that the hotel was full.

After a few years of operation, the Philadelphia location was converted to an office building.Schine Hotels bought the Atlantic City hotel in the late 1940s.The New York hotel was demolished in 1951.[28]

On December 5, 1961, Edward Wyner died of a heart attack.The Boston hotel was sold by his six sons after they were unable to overcome difficulties.

Many people tried to buy the hotel, but the interest on the bonds deterred them.Gerald F.Blakeley Jr. was interested.After more than a year of legal work, Hale and Dorr succeeded in clearing the bond obligations, and in October 1964 the Ritz-Carlton Boston was acquired for $5.8 million.

I owned it for 20 years and it made money for three years.The other years it broke even, but from a public relations standpoint for CC&F, it was a tremendous asset.[28]

The rights to the Ritz-Carlton name in North America were obtained by Blakeley in the late 1960s.The rights and privileges of the Ritz-Carlton trademark in the United States were granted to Blakeley in June 1978.

The builders of a new hotel in Chicago licensed the Ritz-Carlton name in the 1970s.Water Tower Place is where the Ritz-Carlton Chicago opened in 1975.There was no Ritz-Carlton chain in 1977 when it joined the Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts chain.It was marketed as "The Ritz-Carlton Chicago (A Four Seasons Hotel)" for decades.The Ritz-Carlton chain was not associated with it, though it used the name and logo.The property became a franchise of the Ritz-Carlton chain on August 1, 2015.[29]

The Fairfax in Washington, D.C. and the Navarro in New York City were renovated after the name was licensed by John B. Coleman.The Ritz-Carlton Washington D.C. was renamed by Coleman in 1982.Coleman paid a fee of 1.5 percent of each hotel's annual gross revenue to use the name.The two hotels joined the modern chain a few years later.

The Ritz-Carlton Boston and the US trademark was sold in August of 1983 to William B. Johnson, a major Waffle House franchisee who was once the largest owner.The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company was established in its current form after he assembled a four person development team in Atlanta.

The exclusive rights to The Ritz-Carlton brand name were obtained by Johnson in 1988.Htel Ritz Paris is not associated with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, instead joining The Leading Hotels of the World.

The Ritz-Carlton Boston was one of only two hotels in the US from 1951 to 1975.The Ritz-Carlton Atlantic City had been converted to condominiums.The Ritz Condominiums was renamed after Johnson's company paid to abandon its name.[26]

Johnson would enlarge the company to 30 hotels in 10 years.The amount of $85 million was secured by The Ritz-Carlton Boston, which he obtained financing from in 1983.In 1989 and 1994 the loan was re-financed by Manhattan Tops USA of New York.The total debt was $214.8 million when the mortgage was in default in 1996.By splitting the mortgage note into three parts, the bank was able to unbundle The Ritz-Carlton Boston from its trademark rights.

The Ritz-Carlton Boston was bought for $75 million in 1998.The hotel was acquired by Marriott International for $100 million.Marriott International bought the rights to the Ritz-Carlton hotel chain from Johnson for $290 million in 1998.

The founding partner of Millennium Partners obtained The Ritz-Carlton franchises from Marriott in 1998 for four hotel properties, two in Washington and one in New York City.In addition, Jeffries was searching for a brand affiliation for the new 155-room hotel and 270-luxury condominiums he was constructing as part of Boston's Millennium Place, a mixed-use complex on lower Washington Street.The only way he could get a second flag in Boston was to own the existing Ritz-Carlton.

The original Ritz-Carlton Boston was purchased by Millennium Partners for $122 million and spent $50 million on renovations.The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton will share all of the services of Marriott's hotel.

The Ritz-Carlton hotels faced each other across Boston Common from 2001 to 2007.The Ritz-Carlton opened in Boston.

Millennium Partners sold The Ritz-Carlton Boston to Taj Hotels in November of 2006 for $170 million.On January 11, 2007, the Taj Boston became the Ritz-Carlton Boston.[33]

Under the leadership of President and COO, the company grew.The company's well-known customer/employee-centered motto, "We are Ladies and Gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen" and the set of specific service values were created by Schulze.The hotels earned two Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards and grew from four to forty U.S.There are locations.36

The Ritz-Carlton Learning Institute was created by Leonardo Inghilleri, who was an architect, and became known for its influence on service in a wide range of industries.[37]

Marriott International purchased a 50% stake in The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company in 1998, giving it 99% ownership of the company.The West Paces Hotel Group took the name of its primary brand, Capella Hotels, in December 2011.In 2007, the partners formed Sols Hotels.[39]

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company is located in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and Bulgari formed a partnership in 2001 to operate a chain of hotels.The company has marketing agreements with a number of hotels.

The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong opened in 2011.Rosewood Guangzhou became the highest hotel in the world at that time.

Simon Cooper joined Ritz-Carlton in 2001 as President and Chief Operating Officer.Cooper's mandate was to grow the chain through hotel expansion.The Ritz-Carlton's development program has been aggressively expanded by the company under the watch of Cooper.

The new President and Chief Operations Officer of Ritz-Carlton will be Herve Humler, one of the company's founding fathers, who is responsible for leading brand operations and global growth strategy.The Ritz-Carlton, Macau opened in 2015.It is located in Macau.The Ritz-Carlton is a gold palace.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company was featured on the top lists for dining, hotels and service.Top Large Hotel for the Dallas location was one of the top honors from Zagat in 2009.The Ritz-Carlton is the only company to have won two Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards.The Corporate Hotelier of the World Ishikawa Medal was given to Ritz-Carlton's President and COO for his contributions to the Quality movement.[42]

The Ritz-Carlton tries to share its knowledge of quality as it applies to service.The Ritz-Carlton adopted this as a central mission after initially doing it at the request of the Baldrige committee.[37]

The General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pentagon City, Virginia is the first woman to serve in that post.[42]

More than 50,000 executives from other companies worldwide have been trained in The Ritz-Carlton principles in its Learning Institute and Leadership Center.

The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur opened in 1997.It is the only "all butler hotel" in the city, offering butler service to all of its 300+ rooms and suites, and has since been ranked among the "Gold List" of hotels by Condé Nast, ranked as "one of the top five butler hotels" by The Independent.[42]

The former Hotel St. Moritz in New York City was acquired by Ritz-Carlton in 1999.[47]

The first Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Russia opened in July of 2007.According to CNN, The Ritz-Carlton Suite is the 13th most expensive hotel suite in the world.48

The Ritz-Carlton opened the highest hotel in the world in Hong Kong on March 29, 2011.The lobby is above the ground.Morgan Stanley's Asian headquarters are located in a 118-storey building.[51]

The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte, which opened in October 2009, is one of only three properties in the state of Charlotte to earn five-diamonds.

The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale opened in August of 2008 as a St. Regis.

The first skyscraper in Downtown Los Angeles since the early 1990s was built at L.A. Live.The Ritz-Carlton was awarded a silver certification.[52]

Readers of Condé Nast Traveler voted The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong as "The Best Hotel in Asia" over the course of four years.[54]

The Ritz-Carlton has several fractional residences in the United States.The properties include Aspen Highlands in Colorado, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, San Francisco and Jupiter, Florida.

The first floor of The Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan, Jakarta, Indonesia was destroyed by a bomb on July 17, 2009.The explosion happened 2 minutes after the explosion at the Marriott.The Manchester United football club was scheduled to visit the hotel on Monday, but the visit was canceled due to the bombing.Nine people were killed.[56]

The Filipino diaspora protested against the Priority Development Assistance Fund scam at The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles and the JW Marriott Hotels at L.A.It is thought that the family of the alleged scam mastermind owned a $2 million unit in the building.[57]

The Ritz-Carlton opened in Almaty.The Esentai Tower is the tallest building in Central Asia.The Ritz-Carlton Residences can be found on the upper floors.The hotel has a sky bar, a business center, spa, and 9,000 square metres of meeting space.In-room safes, power outlets for laptops, and marble bathroom are included in the rooms.59 and 60

The brand's first kosher restaurant was opened at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Herzliya, Israel.61

The Ritz-Carlton opened a hotel in Saudi Arabia in May of last year and it is one of the largest conference halls in Jeddah.The Hotel is located in Al-Hamra district, a place famous for its luxury hotels and close to the Corniche.[62]

Ritz-Carlton entered the cruise market.The launch of the first ship, the Evrima, was delayed due to construction problems at the Spanish shipyard.The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will be the brand for the cruising arm.[64]

In E.B.Louis, the main character in The Trumpet of the Swan, stays at the Ritz-Carlton Boston, where he eats sandwiches and sleeps in the bathtub.

The entire 9th floor of a fictionalized version of the hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey is occupied by the character of Nucky Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi.The real Nucky Thompson was arrested for tax evasion in 1941 and spent the rest of his life in a suite at the Ritz-Carlton Atlantic City.

The Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay was used in the film American Wedding.

The Ritz is an inspiration for the expression "live opulently" in the song "Puttin' On the Ritz" by Irving Berlin.
