If you have canvas shoes, it is always a good idea to give them a waterproof coating to keep them clean. It is easy to apply Scotchgard, but remember to cover anything you don't want to spray in the area and to do it in aventilated area.Give the shoes time to dry before you wear them, and apply more than one coat for extra protection.
Step 1: There is aventilated area where you can take your shoes.
You want to avoid breathing in the fumes of Scotchgard Fabric Protector. If the weather is good, spray your shoes outside. If you have to, go into a garage or open the windows in the room. While you spray your shoes, keep your kids and pets away.
Step 2: Place newspapers or a cloth on the floor.
Since Scotchgard protects fabric by creating a waterproof seal, you don't want it on things other than your shoes. You can cover your floor or table with newspapers or cloth. No covering is necessary if you spray the shoes outside.
Step 3: The shoes have shoestrings.
A zigzag pattern on the tongues of your shoes can be created by leaving your shoestrings in the shoes. The tongue is completely exposed if they are taken out.If you want, spray the shoestrings separately from the shoes.
Step 4: The tongue of the shoes should be pushed down.
The tongue is covered by the front edges of your shoes. The whole tongue will get sprayed if you push the tongue down into the shoe.
Step 5: Take out the can.
It is not mixed as well as it needs to be because the contents of the can tend to settle over time.If you want to mix it up again, shake the can for 10 seconds.Even if you don't shake it, it will still spray.
Step 6: To test colorfastness, spray a hidden section inside a shoe.
Some fabrics can be affected by Scotchgard. You can check this by spraying a small spot inside the shoes and rubbing the spot with a white rag.It is best not to use Scotchgard on the shoes if the color comes off.Scotchgard can be used to protect fabrics that can't be washed.Scotchgard shouldn't be used if the shoes have the "X" symbol. You need to use Scotchgard Suede & Nubuck Protector for suede shoes.Scotchgard shouldn't be used on leather shoes.
Step 7: The can should be from the shoes.
The shoes should be sprayed with a light mist.If you hold the can too close, it will affect the shoes. The spray will miss the shoes if the can is held past 12 inches.
Step 8: Place the can in a back and forth motion.
The spray can be released by pressing the button.Move the can in a sweeping motion as you mist the shoes with Scotchgard. You should cover the shoes completely, except for the rubber soles.
Step 9: Allow the shoes to dry for a while.
Allow the shoes to sit right side up for a few minutes after spraying them. The Scotchgard can be soaked into the shoes and dried completely. The fan should be set on the shoes.
Step 10: If you want, apply a second coat.
It is possible to give your shoes plenty of protection with one coat of Scotchgard. If you really want total waterproofity, apply one or two more coats of Scotchgard. If you spray the shoes again, you don't want to saturate them.
Step 11: Allow the shoes to dry for a day.
Leave the shoes to dry for a full day to make sure the protectant has fully set into them.Since fumes from the Scotchgard may linger, leave the shoes in the garage.Make sure they don't get wet.
