If you had to cut down a tree in your yard, you might be wondering what to do with the stump that was left behind. There are many ways that you can decorate your stump to make it look better. If you want to be artistic, you can make a planter out of your stump, a fairy house, or a mosaic.
Step 1: To level the stump, use a chainsaw.
The top of your stump needs to be in order for you to make a planter.Cut off the top of the chainsaw as evenly as possible after turning it on.The wood should be easily cut by the chainsaw. If you want to use a chainsaw for small projects, choose an electric chainsaw over a gas one.The guide bar on the chainsaw should be 2 inches longer than the stump. When using a chainsaw, make sure to wear safety glasses, gloves, safety pants, cut-resistant safety boots, head protection, and hearing protection. You can expect your chainsaw to cost a lot.
Step 2: Use a jigsaw to cut the planter's perimeter.
After you have created a smooth, flat surface, use a pencil to draw a circle onto it as big as you would like the planter to be.To drill a hole along the drawn circle, use a drill and a 2 inch drill bit.Follow the line as you insert a jigsaw into the hole.If you don't already have a jigsaw, you can get one that has an average motor power of 18V and a maximum speed of 3000 SPM.You can make smooth curved cuts with a jigsaw that has advanced orbital capabilities. To avoid injury, wear eye protection and be aware of where you put your fingers. Before you change out the blades or the jigsaw, make sure to remove the battery pack.$50-$300USD is the average price for jigsaws.
Step 3: Remove the center with an axe.
You can break up the wood by using an axe.Try to chip away at the center of the stump as much as you can with the axe, while being careful to keep your aim inside the outline. The planter should be about 15 cm deep. You should keep this in mind when using the axe on the stump. If you don't already have an axe, consider getting a small axe or limbing axe for this project. These are 20–28 inches (51– 71 cm) long and weigh 1.53 pounds. You should pay about $50 for an axe.If you want to use your axe safely, get a good grip on it and only use it away from other people. When the blade isn't being used, keep it in a sheath and stone-sharpen it.
Step 4: Use a drill to weaken the wood.
Once you have broken up and removed a lot of wood, you can use a drill to drill holes in the circle outline you created. If you want to break up the wood in the circle, direct the drill up and down.Put the drill down and scoop the wood out of the stump. If you don't already own a drill, go for a 38-inch (0.9 cm) power drill for maximum mobility and flexibility.Power drills cost between $50 and $200USD.While using your drill, wear safety glasses, ear protection, and gloves. When you change out the bit, be careful with where you place your fingers as you work.
Step 5: You can chip away at the weakened wood with a hammer and chisel.
There is still wood in the stump that needs to be removed. You can rest the end of the chisel on one of those areas if you hold it in your non-dominant hand. You can chip it away from the rest of the stump by using a hammer and chisel.Continue until you get to the point where you want to remove the wood. You will need a nail hammer and wood chisel for this project. The cost of hammers and chisels varies. While using a hammer and chisel, wear safety glasses and focus on your aim.
Step 6: There are drainage holes in the stump.
If you want to prevent root rot in your plants and flowers, you need to drill some holes in the planter.Hold your drill against the stump on the other side of the planter and drill all the way through to the bottom of it.Spread this out around the stump for 3-4 more times.
Step 7: Plant your flowers after filling the stump with soil.
Get a well-draining potting soil that is rich in compost and fill your planter with it.You can plant whatever plants you want in the stump planter.
Step 8: Attach the door and windows to the stump.
A small door and a few tiny windows are all you need to make a basic fairy house.Purchase them online or paint them on the stump. You can make the doors and windows yourself with popsicle sticks or other crafting supplies.Attach the door and windows to the stump with a hot glue gun, hammer, and nails. If you want to make stained glass windows, hot glue pieces of sea glass to the stump on the inside of the window frame.
Step 9: The stump has a roof on it.
Measure the top of the stump to see how wide the roof should be.Attach the edges of 2 small pieces of plywood together with hot glue or wood glue. The stump should be placed over the roof.Paint the plywood after you glue it together. Before you put the roof over the stump, let the paint dry completely. If you know how to cut wood, you can attach it to the plywood to make shingles.
Step 10: The outside should be decorated with fairies and accessories.
Natural decorations such as pebbles and twigs can be found outside of the fairy home. These things can be used to make cute additions to the outside of the home. You can purchase fairies and other accessories online and set them in front of the home. There are websites where you can find fairies and fairy accessories.
Step 11: The stump has sand and seal on it.
To make a mosaic, you need a smooth, waterproof surface to work on.To flatten any sharp edges, run a piece of sandpaper back and forth all over the stump. If you want to keep the stump from contracting, you need to coat it with a waterproof seal.It can cause your mosaic to crack.
Step 12: Use a pencil to draft your design.
You can draw the image on the stump with a pencil. This can be anything from your initials to a picture of a sun and moon.It is possible that drafting the image before you make the mosaic will keep you from making a mistake.
Step 13: Take your tiles and break them into pieces.
Pick up a tile by holding a pair of wheeled tile nippers in your hand.If you want to break the tile, place it between the 2 wheels and use both of your hands to squeeze the handle.Continue using the tiles that you plan to use in your mosaic. You can find mosaic tiles and tile nippers at your local arts and crafts store.
Step 14: Push down a tile piece with wood glue.
Spread a small amount of wood glue on the stump with a spoon if necessary.Put a couple pieces of broken tile onto the glue with the side facing down.Press down for a while. While creating your mosaic, repeat this process.
Step 15: The surface of the mosaic can be applied with a spatula.
Let the glue dry for 24 hours after you glue down your tiles.Scoop some sand-less grout onto a flexible spatula and apply it to the entire surface of your mosaic. The application should be wiped smooth with the spatula. The mosaic should be dried completely.
Step 16: The tiles need to be cleaned with white vinegar.
The grout should be dry after 24 hours. You will need to clean the tiles at this point.White vinegar can be sprayed onto your mosaic. The tiles should be wiped clean with a cloth.
