There are 10 things you didn't know about the beloved grocery chain, H-E-B.

H-E-B Grocery Company, which is based in San Antonio, Texas, has more than 340 stores in the US and Mexico.Central Market is an upscale organic and fine foods retailer.The company had a total revenue of US$25 billion.H-E-B was ranked No.Forbes has a list of America's largest private companies.H-E-B was named the Retailer of the Year by Progressive Grocer.H-E-B is ranked 13th on the list of "Top 75 North American Food Retailers" by sales.The 20th largest retailer in the United States is H-E-B.5% of pre-tax profits are donated to charity.10

Florence Butt opened the C.C. on November 26, 1905.The Butt grocery store is on the ground floor of her family home.When Howard Edward Butt returned from World War I, he took over the store.Howard was the owner of his mother's small store when he tried to expand into Central Texas.After launching a second store in Del Rio, Texas, Howard purchased three grocery stores in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.The store was named after Howard E. Butt.[13]

Charles was the president of H-E-B in 1971.H-E-B has grown from annual sales of $250 million in 1971 to $13 billion in 2006 under the leadership of Charles Butt.Craig Boyan was named H-E-B's President and COO in 2010.The COO was Martin Otto, the former CFO and Chief Merchant.H-E-B is the largest privately held company and largest private employer in Texas.Favor Delivery was acquired by H-E-B in February.The merger's details were not disclosed.[17]

H-E-B is investing millions of dollars to replace cashier stations with self-checkout kiosks or smartphone apps at the same time as other supermarkets.cashiers are being replaced by self-checkout lane and app usage.[18]

In March 2021, H-E-B announced that customers would no longer be required to wear masks in their stores.Employees at H-E-B protested the policy change, arguing that it jeopardized the health and safety of staff, customers and the broader community.[20][21]

H-E-B operates more than 300 stores in Texas.According to Progressive Grocer, its operations serve over fifty percent of the Texas market.In addition to general H-E-B stores, the company does business in other retail formats such as Mi Tienda and Joe V's Smart Shop.The company plans to build 19 new stores in Texas.H-E-B opened its first store outside of Texas in 1996, but the expansion was short-lived and failed to catch on.The H-E-B Pantry store format was discontinued in 2000.Consumers were able to vote on possible designs for new H-E-B stores.[28]

One of the largest milk- and bread-processing plants in the Southwest is located in Texas.Milk, ice cream, bread, snacks, and ready-cooked meats and meals are some of the H-E-B products.These and other private-label products are sold under various brands.

Multi-tenant operations can be found in several stores.A bank, cellular kiosk, and multiple nationally recognized tenants can be found in many stores.There are 30 and 31 days.

H-E-B was rated the largest private-sector employer in the region by the Austin Business Journal.[33]

H-E-B had a concept called the Central Market.Central Market in Austin has an organic and international food selection, as well as a European-style bakery and extensive wine and beer selections.Three of the stores are in Dallas, two in Austin, and one in Fort Worth.H-E-B has four different formats of stores that include general merchandise and elements of the Central Market concept.In 2008, a fourth store opened in West Lake Hills, and in 2009, the H-E-B in Bee Caves was renovated.H-E-B's Alon Market opened in San Antonio.36

In July of 2015, a new Spring Creek Market opened on Rayford Road in Spring, Texas.[37]

In 2004, the company launched three H-E-B Plus!Stores with an expanded focus on non-food categories.In 2005, the company added three more locations.The stores expanded product categories in baby, card and party, cosmetics, entertainment, and toys.

Several other locations were later added.

H-E-B opened Mi Tienda in South Houston in 2006 which was a Latino-themed store.Another Mi Tienda opened in north Houston in 2011; it is twice the size of the original location and has 97,000 square feet of space.The second location is off of U.S. Route 59.Mi Tienda, which means "my store" in Spanish, sells Mexican baked goods, a tortilleria, and a carniceria.The Cocina restaurant serves Mexican food and drinks.There is a citation needed.

In 2010, H-E-B opened Joe V's Smart Shop, a brand featuring discount items.The first store opened was in northwest Harris County, Texas.The store format is smaller than a full-service H-E-B store but twice the size.The second location opened in December in northeast Harris County, Texas.There are seven Joe V's stores.The "Joe V" name was based on the name of a company executive who was involved in the development of the store format.[52]

In the 1980's, local grocery chains joined a lawsuit against H-E-B for unfair pricing practices.H-E-B settled the suit out of court with Centeno for $6.5 million and with Handy Andy for an undisclosed amount.55 and 56
