There are different types of printers for home, office, business.

A printer is an external device that takes data from a computer and creates graphics and text on a paper.

A printer makes contact with paper. The print image is usually formed by pressing an inked ribbon against the paper with a hammer or pins. There are some examples of impact printers.

Print heads from 9 to 24 pins are used in the dot-matrix printer. The dots on the paper are created by these pins. The 24 pin dot-matrix printer produces more dots than the 9 pin printer, which results in better quality and clearer characters. The rule is that the more pins, the clearer the letters are.As the print mechanism moves across the entire print line in both directions, the pins strike the ribbon individually. The user can change the black ribbon with a ribbon that has color stripes with the dot-matrix printer.A dot-matrix printer can print at speeds of up to 600 characters per second.

A daisy-wheel impact printer can be used to get the type found on typewriters. The print mechanism looks like a daisy and at the end of each pet is a fully formed character which produces solid-line print.A hammer strikes apetal containing a character against the ribbon and the character prints on the paper. Its speed is usually 25-55 characters per second.

The character-at-a-time printers are too slow in business where a lot of material is printed.A line printer uses a special mechanism that can print a whole line at once; they can typically print the range of 1,200 to 6,000 lines per minute.Line-at-a-time printers are the drum, chain, and band printers.

A drum printer has raised characters on its surface. The number of print positions across the drum is the same as the number on the page.Typically, this number is between 80 and 136 print positions. The drum is moving quickly. There is a print hammer behind the paper. The hammers hit the paper along the ink ribbon against the drum. Each line must be printed with one revolution of the drum. All characters on the line are not printed at the same time, but the time required to print the entire line is fast enough to call a line printer. The average speed of a drum printer is between 300 and 2000 lines per minute.

A chain printer uses characters that are wrapped around pulleys. There is one hammer for each print position. The correct character is detected by the printer's circuitry when it appears on the page. The hammer strikes the page, pressing the paper against a ribbon and the character located at the desired print position. There is an impression on the page. All the required print positions on the line have been filled. The page goes up to print the next line. The chain printers can run from 400 to 2500 characters per minute.

A band printer uses a band instead of a chain and has less hammers. There are five sections of 48 characters each in the steel band printer. The band printer's hammers are mounted on a cartridge that moves across the paper to the appropriate positions. The characters are struck by hammers.A band or chain can be replaced with a new style.

Non-impact printers don't use a striking device to make characters on the paper, and they are much quieter than impact printers. Some printers are not impacted.

Similar to dot-matrix printers in the form of images or characters with little dots, ink-jet printers work the same way.The dots are formed by small droplets of ink.At the rate of approximately 250 characters per second, ink-jet printers form characters on paper by spraying ink from tiny nozzles through an electrical field that arranges the charged ink particles into characters. The ink is absorbed into the paper.Different colors of ink can be used.

A steady stream of ink drops can be heard coming from one or more nozzles in the print head.Droplets of ink are charged when they leave the nozzle. One plate has a positive charge and the other a negative charge, and they guide the droplets to the paper.Full-color printing is possible with the addition of three extra nozzles for the primary colors, but only if you add a nozzle for black ink. When a character or image is being created, a droplet is recycled back to its input nozzle.

Several manufacturers produce printers. If you want to change the color of your printer, you need to replace all the colors. You can replace ink on other color ink-jet printers. If user uses one color more than other colors, these printers are a better choice.Better quality and less noise can be achieved with these printers.

A laser printer is similar to a photocopy machine.Laser printers produce images on paper by directing a laser beam at a mirror which bounces the beam onto a drum. There is a special coating on the drum.Using patterns of small dots, a laser beam conveys information from the computer to a positively charged drum. The area of the drum which becomes neutralized causes the toner to detach. The paper is rolled by the drum and the ink is transferred to the paper.A hot roller is used to bond the paper.

buffers are used to store a whole page at a time.A whole page will be printed. The speed of laser printers is high and they don't make a lot of noise. If each page contains 48 lines, a home-use laser printer can print 437 pages per minute.High speed laser printers were expensive.Laser printers have been available for use in small businesses in the last few years.
