The members of the chapter wanted to sponsor a cotillion for high school seniors.The members wanted to recognize the accomplishments of these students.Prior to establishing the cotillion, the high school seniors in the chapter's youth leadership group, Al-Ka-Pals, were acknowledged with a Senior Recognition Day.The senior Al-Ka-Pals of the Class of 1981 requested a more embellished affair.Donna Payne suggested to the chapter that an advisory council be established to plan an elaborate activity for the graduating Al-Ka-Pal seniors.The council was made up of Carolyn Day, Paula Sharper, and Joné West.Chapter President Inez T. Nunley announced that the chapter would hold a jewelry festival on April 25, 1981.The first co-chairmen were Carolyn Day and Nancy Palmer.

Leadership, scholarship, service, and cultural enrichment are some of the components that make up the Cotillion.The culmination of the process is an elegant event.The scholarships are awarded to eligible participants.Over half a million dollars has been provided to eligible participants from Dayton and the surrounding communities.
