There have been 2 deaths in the last couple of months due to fractal burning.
The art of burning designs in wood dates back to prehistory.cutaneous burns and airway injury are risks of traditional techniques.A high-voltage electrical source is used to burn branched designs into wood. The risks associated with this technique are not well understood.A patient came to the burn center after sustaining high-voltage electrical injuries while making art using an improvised transformer. He suffered electrical burns to his neck, chest, and upper body during the wood-burning process. On admission, bilateral upper extremity fasciotomies were performed. The complex reconstruction of the left thumb was the culmination of multiple subsequent operations. From July 2016 to January 2020, we found 25 unique individuals with death or injury due to wood burning. There were 20 deaths and five sustained substantial injuries. The ages ranged from 17 to 60.There were one death and one injury in females.Four of the survivors sustained significant electrical injuries and three of them had to be resuscitated.High-voltage electrical injuries and death can be caused by friars wood burning. The potential for death and permanently disabling injuries from this art form should be the focus of prevention efforts.
