Your check engine light comes on when there is a problem with the emission control system in your vehicle. The light can help you narrow down the problem by generating a code.If the code doesn't clear automatically, you may need to reset the light.Code scanning is the best way to reset the engine light. If your vehicle was manufactured before 1996, you can simply remove the battery to reset the light.
Step 1: You can buy or borrow a code scanner.
All vehicles made after 1996 are eligible for the "OBD" and "ODB-II" scans.Unless you plan on using it frequently, it is better to borrow a code scanner. You could borrow a scanning device from a friend or family member.Vehicles made before the 1990s may not have an OBD port under the dash.If they do, you may need a different scanning device.
Step 2: Under the steering column is where the scanner should be plugged.
Modern vehicles have ports designed for them.Look underneath the steering column to find the port, then connect the cord to the scanning device.Refer to your vehicle's manual if you can't find the port.
Step 3: Press the read button on the scanner if you turn the key to "on" position.
Do not start the vehicle if you put your key in the ignition. All the vehicle's accessories, like the radio, should be turned off once the dash lights come on.The check engine light code can be accessed by pressing the "read" button on the scanner. There will be letters and numbers in the code.Make the necessary repairs to your vehicle if you record all of the codes. The codes will be defined or explained by some and not by others.Look up the code in the owner's manual if you don't get a definition.
Step 4: After pressing the "erase/clear" button on your scanner, turn off the key.
Your check engine light will be turned off temporarily if you clear any codes present. If you wait until you see a "no codes" message, you can turn off your vehicle. The codes do not fix the problem. It is a good idea to take your vehicle to a mechanic if your check engine light comes on.
Step 5: The negative cable needs to be removed from the battery.
The battery can be found by popping the hood.If you want to remove the negative cable from the terminal, you have to use a wrench.
Step 6: The remaining electricity should be drained from theCapacitor.
Try to switch on the vehicle's lights by pressing and holding the horn for 30 seconds. The horn and lights won't work since there's no power, but attempting to do so will use up the electricity in theCapacitor.
Step 7: Wait 15 minutes and connect your battery.
Leaving the battery disconnected for 15 minutes will cause the vehicle systems to reset. If applicable, cover the negative cable with a cap.The check engine light will be reset if the battery is disconnected.
