Even though you clean your laundry from your washer and dryer, they have to be cleaned as well. After many loads of laundry, the inside of your washing machine can accumulate dirt and detergent, and the drum can be contaminated with fecalbacteria. The inside of your dryer can accumulate lint, dust and dirt, so a thorough cleaning every few months will mean that your clothes will get cleaner.
Step 1: Use a damp sponge to clean the top and bottom of the washer.
Step 2: If your machine has a lint trap, rinse it under water.
Step 3: There are dispensers for soap, bleach and fabric softener.
If these cups are not replaceable, rinse them under water. If that's the case, use a pipe cleaner or cotton swabs. They won't get an accumulated build-up of gunk if you do this after each load.
Step 4: If you want to get rid of mold and odors, you can run the machine empty with hot water and 2 cups of white vinegar.
You can use 1 cup of bleach, but it can damage the rubber gasket.
Step 5: If you have hard water, you can run a cycle of hot water and a gallon of white vinegar.
Hard water or well water can cause mineral deposits.
Step 6: The lint filter needs to be clean.
The narrow wand attachment on your vacuum cleaner can be used to remove lint underneath the filer. If you don't have a vacuum, put a duster in the filter well and wipe up the lint.
Step 7: It is a good idea to vacuum or wipe the inside of the dryer.
Step 8: You can remove the dryer lint duct or vacuum it out.
Step 9: Look for the outside vent.
Make sure the vent isn't blocked by debris or lint by lifting the flap.
Step 10: It's a good idea to wash the exterior and top of the dryer.
The soap should be washed off with warm, sudsy water.
Step 11: To remove melted crayons, ink or dyes, apply an all-purpose spray cleaner on the drum and wipe it up with a damp cloth or paper towel.
If you don't want to use the spray cleaner on your old towels, you can run them on the high setting for 20 minutes.
