It's easy to get a good quality recording if you listen to your favorite songs. It's not easy if you don't have the right equipment or techniques. The pop filter is easy to make with household materials. You'll be able to get rid of the popping that can result from "P" and "B" sounds with the new filter.
Step 1: There is a wire coat hanger.
Pull the bottom of the triangle away from the hook like a bow and arrow. You should now have a square-shaped object.
Step 2: You don't have to be perfect to make something more circular.
If you're having trouble bending the wire, try using a pair of pliers. You can pull the other side of the vice if you have a vice.
Step 3: Take a pair of tights or pantyhose and drape them over the circle.
To get a flat, drum-like surface, pull them as tight as possible. The slack should be around the hook.Keep the stretched portion tight by using tape or rubber band.
Step 4: The microphone is in front of the filter.
You want it close to the mic.It shouldn't be touching it.It should be between your mouth and the mic.Anything you can do to get the new filter to stay in front of the mic is fair game. There are a few ideas here.If you like, you can bend the hook into a wide curve and tape the end to the mic stand. To get the screen in the right spot, bend the wire. The mic stand has a filter on it.Most hardware stores have small, cheap clamps for a few dollars.Place the filter in front of the first mic stand. It's important to keep in mind that some mics are designed to take in sound from the top while others are for the front. The recording surface of the mic is where you want the filter to be.
Step 5: Talk into the mic, sing or use the filter.
You're ready to record.Stand or sit and make sure the filter is between you and the mic.Your mouth should be close to the filter.Break a leg!Listen to the way the sounds come out on your recording. If your volume levels are configured correctly, you shouldn't hearclipping with these sounds. Not using a pop filter can cause your recording to be distorted.
Step 6: A hoop filter is required.
Step 7: The nylon is stretched across a sewing hoop.
A sewing or embroidery hoop is a simple hoop made from metal or plastic that holds a piece of fabric in place when you're sewing.A hoop of about six inches across will be the same size as most pop filters. The hoops have a simple latch on one side.Slip the fabric over the inner hoop so that it stretches beyond its edges.Keep the fabric tight by placing the inner hoop back inside the outer hoop. For more help, read our article.
Step 8: Use screen door material if you wish.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but stiff fabrics make better pop filters. This works well if you have tight metal or plastic nets that are stretched across the open spaces of screen doors. You can stretch it across the hoop. Most large hardware stores have screen door mesh. It's cheap, but you may be forced to buy a roll of the material, rather than the small amount that you actually need.
Step 9: The microphone is in front of the hoop.
All you have to do is move your pop filter. One easy way to do this is to tape, glue, or use a free mic stand. You can attach the hoop to a stick or coat hanger and then use a microphone to amplify it.You can use the mic as normal. The filter is only one layer thick with this method. It should work as well.
Step 10: Remove the plastic lid from the coffee can.
A coffee can lid will be used to make a frame for fabric that will act as a filter. Many different sizes can work, but in general, wide, stiff lids of six inches across work well. The best plastic lids are stiff. It's not ideal to have flexible, floppy lids.
Step 11: Remove the middle of the lid.
Use a pair of scissors or a craft knife to cut out the center portion of the lid.You should have a plastic hoop when you're done.Through the center part of the lid.You may need a drill, awl, or saw for the stiffest plastic lids.Use these tools with care.Proper eye protection is a must.
Step 12: pantyhose or nylon material is tight across the gap
All you need to do is make the filter with a tight layer of porous fabric after you have a stiff hoop of plastic.tights or pantyhose work well.Simply slide a stocking over the hoop, pull it tight, gather the slack at the bottom, and secure it with rubber bands or tape. You can use screen door mesh like in the section above, but it's a little harder. The back of the rim is a good place to keep these materials tight.
Step 13: The direction is to use the filter as directed.
The pop filter is ready to use.If you want to position it in front of the mic, you can use tape or a clamps.
