There is an old wardrobe that needs to be painted.
If you're tired of looking at an outdated wardrobe that doesn't match your bedroom style, it's time for a change.A new coat of paint can change the look of a piece. If you have painted wood before, you are familiar with sanding and primer. You can use a new paint color to make your wardrobe look better. If you feel like changing it, swap out the handles and pulls.
Step 1: Move the wardrobe away from the wall and put a tarp on it.
If you can move the wardrobe quickly, put it in a well-ventilated room.Don't worry if you cannot.Drop cloths should be spread on the floor to protect the wardrobe from the elements. If you want good air, open the windows. You don't want to breathe in fine sawdust or paint particles if you wear a dust mask and goggles.
Step 2: Hardware and doors have to be removed from the wardrobe.
Remove the hardware like handles, knobs, or pulls with a screwdriver.Remove the hinges that hold the doors in the front of the wardrobe.Set the small pieces aside so you don't misplace them. It's true that you can leave the doors on the wardrobe, but you might miss some spots.Pull the drawers out of your wardrobe before you sand.
Step 3: Rub coarse sandpaper on the wardrobe to remove paint or stains.
Rub the block back and forth across the entire wardrobe.Once you can see the bare wood, stop sanding. You could use an electric sander or a chemical stripper to remove stubborn paint.Keep in mind that chemical strippers are messy and hard on the wood, so try this option if it isn't effective.
Step 4: Prepare the surface by sanding it with medium-grit sandpaper.
A medium-grit block is between 80 and 120.Sand the wardrobe again. The medium-grit sandpaper roughs up the wood to make it easier for paint to stick to it.If your wardrobe has doors and drawers, sand them.
Step 5: Let the wardrobe dry by wiping away the sawdust with a cloth.
Put a soft cloth in the water and wring it out.To remove the powdery sawdust, wipe the wardrobe with a damp cloth.Wait until the wood is completely dry.The doors and drawers have been sanded.
Step 6: It's a good idea to tape off areas of the wardrobe you don't want to paint.
If you have drawers in your wardrobe, you may not want to paint the inside of them, or there may be decorative edging that you would prefer a different color. If you don't want to paint any areas, tear off blue painter's tape. The tape prevents paint from dripping onto areas you don't want to paint.
Step 7: The primer should be brushed onto the corners and details.
To brush a paintbrush on tight corners or decorative edges, dip it into the primer and brush it onto the corners. If you want to paint tight spaces, use a paint roller. It can be tempting to skip the primer, but it really helps your paint go on smoothly and it can prevent paint from peeling later on.
Step 8: A foam roller is used to apply primer.
Try and coat a foam roller with primer. The primer should be spread over the sides, front, and frame of the wardrobe.Toprime the doors, lay them flat on your tarp or drop cloth and prime 1 side at a time. You need to dry them for 4 to 6 hours before flipping them over.
Step 9: Wait for the primer to dry and then paint the wardrobe.
If you prime the wardrobe in the morning, you can start painting it by the afternoon.
Step 10: Furniture paint or oil-based paint can be purchased in a semi-gloss finish.
It won't peel over time if you use oil-based or furniture paint.Since they're easy to clean and won't show scratches, fingerprints or everyday wear, choose a semi-gloss finish for your wardrobe.Don't be afraid to go bold with the paint color, it will give your old wardrobe a new look.If you want a big change or want to add interest to your room, paint an old wardrobe black or white. If you're style is rustic or shabby chic, you can use chalk paint.
Step 11: Paint the flat surfaces with a paint roller.
You can load the roller by dipping the paint roller into the tray.Apply a coat to the wide flat sides of the wardrobe. The inside of the wardrobe can be seen when you open the doors.Don't forget to paint the doors.
Step 12: You can use a small paintbrush to paint.
You can use a paintbrush to paint areas that are difficult to reach with the roller.Paint around the hinges, edges, and feet.If you want to fit the bristles into tight spaces, you might want a smaller brush.
Step 13: Allow the paint to dry for a while.
You should wait 24 hours after the first coat to apply the next coat of paint because it takes longer to paint furniture. You might accidentally pull up the paint as you apply the next coat if you hurry.
Step 14: Get uniform coverage by applying another coat.
You will be able to see brush strokes after applying the first coat of paint. The rich color of your paint can be brought out with additional coats of paint. If you're painting the wardrobe a dark color, it probably only needs 1 more coat, but lighter colors need 2 or 3 coats to get uniform coverage.Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours between coats.
Step 15: If you want to protect the wardrobe, apply a few coats of polycrylic varnish.
Your wardrobe will probably get a lot of use, so varnish can protect it and keep the finish looking great. If you want to brush the wardrobe with a clean paintbrush, dip it into polycrylic.Wait about an hour before applying another coat. It's a bad idea to use polyurethane, which can turn yellow over time.
Step 16: If you want to give wooden handles or pulls a new look, you can paint the hardware.
Sand and prime the handles and pulls if they were painted. If you want them to blend in, you can either paint them the same color as the wardrobe or use an acrylic paint color. If you want the handles to stand out, paint them black. If you have a dark navy blue wardrobe, you could paint the hardware pale blue or white.
Step 17: If you want to change the style of the wardrobe, buy replacement hardware.
You can change the look of your wardrobe with new handles or pulls.Pick out hardware that is comfortable and works with the wardrobe. If your wardrobe is a neutral color, you want the hardware to stand out.Try brushed-nickel handles on a black wardrobe. If you have a pale wardrobe, add gold hardware to it.
Step 18: You should wait at least 48 hours before you replace the hardware.
Since wardrobes get a lot of wear and tear, it's a good idea to let the paint cure before you replace doors, hardware, and drawers.Give the paint at least 48 to 72 hours to cure. The doors and hardware should be put back in place. If it has drawers, put them in the wardrobe.
