Boston Terriers are social and friendly. They are very eager to please and are helpful for training.Boston Terriers are stubborn, which could make training them a challenge. You can train your Boston Terrier and turn him into a well-behaved and loving companion with time, patience and persistence.
Step 1: The crate for the Boston Terrier should be the right size.
Training your Boston Terrier with crate training is important. He will be able to see his crate as a place of safety and comfort because of it.His crate should be large enough for him to stand up and move around in, but not so large that he can create a separate bathroom space. The ideal crate size for Boston Terriers is between 24 and 36 inches.
Step 2: The crate should be used as a comfortable environment.
To make the crate look more inviting to your Boston Terrier, put some creature comforts inside, including comfortable bedding, his water bowl and some toys.He cannot tip the bowl over. Some of the toys should be chew toys so he can learn how to use them.Boston Terriers like to chew.If you crate train your Boston Terrier, he won't be destructive in your home when you're not there.Good chew toys include rubber balls and rawhide.
Step 3: There is a crate with a Boston Terrier inside of it.
At first, your Boston Terrier may be hesitant to enter the crate. If he wants to go in, place some food in the crate. If you want to lure him inside, place his food bowl just outside the crate, then in the doorway, and then the back of his crate.Give your Boston Terrier a treat when he enters the crate on his own.He will make a positive association with being inside the crate if you give him more positive reinforcement. The crate door should be left open so he can enter whenever he wants. When he hears your command, immediately give him a treat and praise, as your Boston Terrier becomes more comfortable with entering the crate.Be patient with your dog.It may take some time for him to get into the crate.Work at his pace.
Step 4: For a short while, crate your Boston Terrier.
When your Boston Terrier can enter the crate on his own, close the door and leave him inside.Wait for him to calm down, then close the door and give him a treat. You can leave the room and come back at random times.Slowly, you will be able to leave your Boston Terrier in the crate overnight. If you have a puppy, keep in mind that he can't hold his bladder for very long and you will need to take him outside regularly to eliminate.Proper crate training can help the Boston Terriers feel more comfortable when not at home.
Step 5: It is advisable to start house training early.
The sooner you start training your dog, the better.Boston Terriers are very tidy and will not make a mess in your home.It is possible to keep him confined to a small area in your home until he is house trained.Baby gates can be used to section off a portion of a larger room if a small bedroom isn't available. It may take up to 6 months to train your Boston Terrier, so be patient.
Step 6: Pick an outdoor bathroom spot for your dog.
In the same spot, your Boston Terrier should go to the bathroom. The established bathroom area will allow your Boston Terrier to leave his scent in the area and make it his territory. If you have a puppy, you may need to set up an indoor bathroom spot in the confined area where he can eliminate when you are away from home.Newspapers can be used in the bathroom. This may prolong housetraining.
Step 7: Establish and maintain a schedule for bathroom use.
Boston Terriers have a good routine.A regular bathroom schedule will let your Boston Terrier know when to go to the bathroom. If you have a puppy, it's a good idea to take him outside after his first meal of the day to wake him up.You can take your Boston Terrier out after drinking water and playing.A puppy can hold his bladder for up to 12 months.Boston Terriers don't need to eliminate as frequently as puppies, but should still be on a bathroom schedule.
Step 8: When you take your dog outside, make sure he is on a leash.
If you have a backyard, it may be tempting to let your Boston Terrier out to go to the bathroom. An indoor bathroom accident is more likely if he doesn't eliminate that way.Walk your Boston Terrier on a leash outside during house training.
Step 9: Reward your dog when he is outside.
Your own Boston Terrier needs your praise when he goes to the bathroom outside. After he finishes eliminating, give him a lot of praise. You could also give him something to eat.
Step 10: You don't have to punish your Boston Terrier if you clean up accidents.
If your Boston Terrier pees or poops in your home during house training, don't be surprised.Pick him up, put him on a leash, and take him outside if you catch him doing something. If you see the accident, you can clean it up with an enzymatic cleaner that will remove the odor and prevent him from going in the same spot again.Reward your Boston Terrier when he's done eliminating outside. He will be encouraged to wait until he is outside.Rub your Boston Terrier with urine or feces.Since he will not associate the punishment with what he did, this won't teach him that he's done something wrong. This may make him afraid of you.
Step 11: At a time, teach your Boston Terrier one command.
If you try to teach your Boston Terrier multiple commands at the same time, he may become confused. He may want to stop training if he becomes confused. It is better for him to master one command first.Sit, stay, and heel are some of the basic commands. The basic commands of the Boston Terrier can be taught in an obedience class.Ask your vet if there are good classes for your dog.
Step 12: Limit how many times each command can be repeated.
It may take a few tries for your Boston Terrier to master a particular command.Move on to the next command if that is the case.If your Boston Terrier has to do the same thing many times, stop teaching it as soon as he masters it.
Step 13: Keeping training sessions short is important.
Your Boston Terrier will benefit from daily training.Since dogs have short attention spans, your training sessions should be no more than 10 minutes. You can have multiple training sessions in a day if you keep them short and allow long breaks in between.
Step 14: Reinforcement using positive reinforcement.
Positive reinforcement is a must when training a Boston Terrier.Reward your Boston Terrier with a treat and praise when he correctly responds to a command. The treat should be given within about 2 to 4 seconds of him following the command. When giving your Boston Terrier a treat, always use verbal praise. He will learn to associate praise with treats.Boston Terriers like treats.Pick dog treats that your Boston Terrier can eat quickly and easily.
Step 15: Speak with a positive tone of voice to your dog.
Boston Terriers are sensitive to sound of voice.Shouting at your Boston Terrier, or using an angry tone, can cause him to shut down.Your tone should be bright and positive. If you become angry or frustrated, do not raise your voice at your Boston Terrier. He may be scared by a loud voice.
Step 16: During extreme weather, train your Boston Terrier inside.
Terriers have short faces and can have trouble breathing. When it is hot, humid, or very cold outside, train your Boston Terrier inside.Give him access to plenty of water and limit your training sessions to 10 to 15 minutes if you work with him outside.
Step 17: Train your dog throughout his life.
You can train your Boston Terrier for a long time to be a well-behaved dog.He will need constant training to ensure he doesn't forget what he learned, even if he mastered every command you taught him.You can start teaching your Boston Terrier tricks after about 3 to 6 months of basic training.
