In a motor vehicle, headlights are a vital safety feature. It is very important to learn how to turn on your headlights.
Step 1: The controls for the headlights are located.
There are a few spots that are commonly used for the headlights in vehicles. There is a control arm near the steering wheel. The control panel for the headlights is just beneath the dashboard on the driver's left side. These panels are found in larger vehicles with more dashboard space. There is a small panel with a dial on it.The indicators should be positioned around the dial. The control arm for the headlights is attached to the steering wheel. The arm can be positioned to either the left or right of the steering wheel, with the control dial located at the end of it.The standard headlight indicator symbols will be used to mark this headlight control dial.
Step 2: The off position is something to look at.
The controls for the headlights will be switched to off.If you want to turn off the headlights when you're done, you need to know where the symbol lies along the dial.To the far left or underside of the dial is where the "off" position is located. It is usually marked by an empty circle. When your vehicle is on and your headlights are off, many vehicles have running lights that come on automatically. If you see lights shining from the front of your vehicle but your headlights are not on, that's probably because those lights are running. When you turn off your car, make sure the headlights are off.Keeping the headlights on while the vehicle is off can drain the automobile's battery, and the car will not turn on later if the battery is drained dry.You need to jump start your car if you forget to drain the battery.
Step 3: The switch needs to be turned to the correct symbol.
The control dial should be between your thumb and index finger. You should feel the dial click as it passes into each setting, because the different settings are indicated by separate symbols. Most cars have parking lights on.There are red and orange lights on the rear of the vehicle. The "low beam" setting is the next one. When other vehicles are less than 60 meters ahead of you, the headlamps should be used on crowded roads. The fog light control can be found on a separate button next to the standard headlights.A downward-pointing light is used to illuminate the road. They should be used when visibility is poor. The main beam and high beam are found on the low beam control. This setting is usually on a stick on the steering column, sometimes the stick that controls the turn signal is separate from the low beam control. The turn signal lever forwards or backwards can be used to turn on the high beams. When other cars are not present or nearby, you should only use these lights.
Step 4: Check the results.
Check the way your headlights react when you turn the control dial.If you have someone who can help you, you should ask them to stand in front of your vehicle while it is parked.Roll your window down so that you can communicate with your helpers.Ask your helpers to identify the setting. If you don't have someone to help you, park your vehicle in front of a garage, wall, or similar structure. If you want to look at how the light shines on the surface, you have to turn the control dial to each position. You should be able to determine which setting is brighter based on how bright the lights are.
Step 5: You should know when to use your headlights.
When visibility is low, you should use your headlights. If you can't see 500 to 1000 feet ahead of you, your headlights must go on.At night, use your headlights. When other vehicles are nearby, use the low beams. At dawn and dusk, use your headlights.Even though some sunlight is present, deep shadows from buildings and other structures can make it difficult to see other vehicles.During these hours of the day, you should use your low beams.Bad weather can include rain, snow, fog, or dust storms.Since the reflection and glare they produce can make it harder for other drivers to see clearly, don't use your high beams.
Step 6: The basic headlight indicator symbol is what you should look for.
The headlamp indicator symbol is used to mark most headlight controls. The control dial has a symbol on it.The indicator looks like a light bulb. There is an enclosed circle next to the indicator symbol on many headlight control dials. The side of the dial is marked by a circle.Align this circle with the setting you want to use.
Step 7: The symbol for each setting should be identified.
The symbols for each headlight setting are almost always the same from vehicle to vehicle. If your vehicle has parking lamps, the lights should be indicated by a symbol that looks like the letter "p" with several lines extending out from the rounded front.Downward-slanted lines extend out from the flat side of the "low beam" symbol. The "fog light" symbol has the same shape as the low beam symbol. One wavy line should go through the center of the slanted lines. The "high beam" symbol is similar to a capital "D" but the lines extending out from the flat side are horizontal.
Step 8: The dashboard has warning symbols.
When certain car lights aren't working correctly, cars with electronic/digital dashboard may display a warning light. If one of the warning lights flashes, you should have the headlight fixed or changed. The standard headlight indicator symbol with an exclamation mark may be displayed when your headlights are malfunctioning.Or it could be "x" across it.The low beam indicator may be displayed with an exclamation mark over it.
