Since tomorrow is no work for most, no school, a day to cook out on the grill or just relax, then you know that it is special.Any day that warrants a national holiday must be special.Labor Day is the first Monday of September.Most of us don't understand Labor Day's significance or its origin.
The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882, according to the Department of Labor.The idea was spread by the growth of labor organizations.Labor Day was created to honor the strength, freedom and leadership of the American worker.According to a search on yahoo.com, we celebrate Labor Day on a different day than the rest of the world because of embarrassment associated with the real day.On May 1, 1886, an explosion that was quite mysterious happened after an international protest to the execution of four anarchists in Chicago.The embarrassment to our country in explaining this history resulted in its recognition as we know it at this time of the year.Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894.Labor Day is seen as the official end of summer even if you don't know the history.You are aware that behaviors and attitudes of many people change after Labor Day.
In this column, I will refine my thoughts and examine the practices surrounding footwear that is taboo after Labor Day.Based on the rules of the game from back in the day, what shoes should we put away after Labor Day?
If you don't recall, I wrote a column about what should not be worn after Labor Day.straw hats were mentioned a lot.I was told by my father that a straw hat after Labor Day was not acceptable.In his hometown of Walterboro, S.C., people would take the straw hat of others if they wore it after Labor Day.The Labor Day rule identified seersucker outfits as inappropriate.White socks, a white belt, linen clothing, cotton khakis and cotton suits, short-sleeve dress shirts, T-shirts, denim outfits, sunglasses and more were added to these items.I addressed the issue of wearing white after Labor Day.While wearing white clothing after Labor Day has become more acceptable in recent years, such items have remained on my list of things not to wear.Today's column targets the things that we shouldn't put on our feet after Labor Day because of fashion decorum established back in the day.
I have two types of shoes in my closet that will be packed away tomorrow evening and not worn again until next summer.If you are not from my generation, you may not be familiar with the name "spectator shoes", but you know them when you see them.Think about what appeared on the feet of the "Big Band" personality.Think about the shoes with pink edging that are black and white.The shoe is a spectator.The classic spectator shoe has a perforated detail.The color white on the shoe causes it to be summery, which is the reason this shoe is abandoned by me and others after Labor Day.While you may think of this shoe as worn by men, spectator shoes are also used by women.It is a summer shoe and disappears after Labor Day.The white buck is one of the shoes that will be moved to the storage section of my closet, and I know what you are saying, that I should have retired my white bucks as they belong back in the "Pee Wee Herman" era.I sometimes wear my white bucks along with my double-breasted seersucker suit to make a statement.I try to wear clean white bucks.I keep a small bag with white powder in my white buck shoe box.Those in my era viewed this look as an outstanding presentation, even though you may think it has no place in the fashion world today.
The saddle shoe is something most people know about.It has a plain toe with a saddle-shape panel in the middle of the shoe.The shoe is usually black and white.This shoe is not to be worn after Labor Day.Several of my friends told me that they wear sandals during the winter even though I thought they wouldn't.If you saw someone wearing gladiator sandals after Labor Day, what would you say?What do you think about wearing sneakers after Labor Day?Do you only wear them to the gym or for exercise in the cold?The flip-flops should not be worn after Labor Day.Someone wearing moccasins in the past was put away on Labor Day.Some people are wearing disgusting footwear in stores or out running.The shower shoe is only for indoor or beach wear, so forget about Labor Day.The Espadrilles shoe has been around for hundreds of years, but I don't recall it in the past.It is not for wear after Labor Day.
There is an issue of wearing a white shoe after Labor Day.The well-to-do wore white after Labor Day in the past.This is an issue that would require a column to address.I have been reminded that things will change even more.The open-toe shoe is related to some of the changes.After Labor Day, open-toe shoes were packed away.They are worn year-round.I have been told that the open-toe shoe will become even more popular during the fall and winter season.A discussion with one of my colleagues on the open-toe shoe led to a discussion of the disappearance of nylon stockings.If you are from my age group, you know that you never saw a female at church, work, out socially or just dressed up without stockings.I thought the weather would change once cold weather arrived.I'm told that cold weather doesn't affect whether females wear stockings.Back in the day, stockings were a back-in-the-day style.
In talking with several of my female colleagues at the Tribune offices, I was told that fashion has progressed and moved to the point where we don't have to follow our traditional rules of the past.Women have made their own rules.I was told that my thoughts about shoes that are considered inappropriate after Labor Day should be buried.I was told that this is a fashion statement that has a place in the past.
