Every coin starts with an artist's sketch. Product developers collaborate with coin designers and engineers to design an image that will translate well onto a coin. Once the design is approved, a three-dimensional model is sculpted using either traditional plaster modelling or 3D modelling software.

How are coins produced?
A small lump of gold, silver, or copper was placed on a coin die embedded into a solid surface like a rock. The worker would then take a second coin die place it on top of it and strike it with a large hammer. Modern coins are minted with hydraulic coining presses that automatically feed the blanks into the machine.
Are coins cast or pressed?
The precious metal to be struck is supplied to the mints in large, coiled strips, which are then cut into the correct size by a blanking press. Proof blanks are fed by hand into the presses, because proof quality doesn't allow mass production. Also, some coins may receive a hand-painted finish after they are minted.

In numismatics, the term milled coinage (also known as machine-struck coinage) is used to describe coins which are produced by some form of machine, rather than by manually hammering coin blanks between two dies (hammered coinage) or casting coins from dies.
